UTI’s

Posted by charliemyboy @charliemyboy, Sep 9, 2019

I’m 70 years old and I’m experiencing too many bladder infections. I also have some urinary incontinence.
I wear a thick pad. Could this cause the UTI’s?

@charliemyboy I went through a period of problems that were thought to be caused by mild UTIs and I also wear incontinence pads. I asked if the pads could be a problem and was told they would not be. I presume as long as the pad is changed regularly it is fine.
If you are having very frequent UTIs it is possible that when you take an antibiotic it isn't totally getting rid of it. I have heard of that happening in other people. After finishing the course of antibiotics does your doctor retest you?

Hello, @charliemyboy, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can imagine it would be challenging seeing the uterine tract infections (UTI) disappear and then come back again. I also had some urinary incontinence prior to prolapse surgery (like when I'd exercise vigorously, laughed or coughed, or simply waited too long to go), and I found it distressing and kind of humiliating.

I'd like to bring in @baxtersmom @shoregal45 @afrobin @nene22 @bobsgift @safetyshield for any input on the UTIs and any connection they may have to experiencing some urinary incontinence.

In the meantime, I thought you might be interested in this Mayo Clinic information on UTIs: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/urinary-tract-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353447

charliemyboy - did your doctor who's treated you for the UTIs have any thoughts about a possible relationship to the incontinence?

@charliemyboy- Welcome to Mayo clinic Connect. I'm glad that you found us. These frequent UTI's are the pits. Sometimes the urethra needs to be stretched, sometimes it's bacterial and sometimes there are more serious problems. And yes, pads can cause UTI's but that doesn't mean that this is what is causing yours.
I have to ask you some questions, so bear with me. What treatments are you receiving so far, if any? Is your urine tested each time? What does your doctor say?

@charliemyboy Welcome to connect . ONe thing I know about UTI.s is when you go to the bathroom you should wipe from front to back. If the poop gets onto your front you can get bacteria there and this will cause problems.. It could be the Dr. hasn't found the correct antibiotic yet also Just some suggestions.
