prolapsed bladder improvement

Posted by misssassy @misssassy, Sep 4, 2019

I want to share my prolapsed bladder--which I'd never had surgery for ---- that I'd been using a pessary to let me be comfortable now is at least 85 % -90% better thanks unbelievably and evidently because I have lot 35 pounds. At 5" 6" and 77 years old, I had weighed between 200 and 217 for the last 15 or so years ! But this 35 pound loss has made all the difference in the world ! I currently only use the pessary---which is a manual one I control the usage of---when I am going to be on my feet or more physically active than usual that day ! I probably wouldn't have believed a weight loss would improve my "fallen" bladder so much if anyone had told me such ! But it's true and I am grateful for it ! Hopefully I will be losing another 20 pounds or so soon ! Will be interesting to see if the bladder situation improves then too ! Best wishes !

@misssassy, how wonderful that the healthy weight loss has had the unexpected benefit of improving the prolapsed bladder. What motivated you to want to lose weight? What activities do you do?

Colleen, I've dealt with being overweight off and on all my life ! 216 my top weight at 5 ft 6 ". But at age 78 now knowing I need to do everything possible to maintain some semblance of good health I just started eating less and small amounts more often, though I've known and probably been on every diet known to man kind in my life ! I am not very physically active and need to do better, try to walk more often. Plus I've not changed anything else in my life . Wish I could be telling you I followed some fabulous diet that was easy as pie to explain my weight loss. But that's unfortunately not the case. I am just stunned my prolapsed bladder has improved so greatly with the weight loss ! It certainly was never thought about nor had any doctor or friend ever suggested it might occur ! Thanks for your interest. Sally

@misssassy, I appreciate the additional details. Actually, I'm rather relieved that you don't have some fabulous diet to tell me about. Simply conditioning yourself to eat smaller portions is more likely to have more staying power. I'd encourage you to share your prolapse experience here:

75 yr old female. Used a pessary, manually, several years. Height 5' 6" . Weighed 210. lost 30 lbs. Now at 180 lbs my bladder has "recovered" and is no longer a problem. No one ever told me losing weight would bring such success with my bladder ! YAY YAY YAY

Hello @misssassy. You may notice I moved your new discussion on prolapsed bladder improvement and combined it with your original discussion of the same title from September of 2019. I'd like to invite @veronicat, @baxtersmom and @gardeningjunkie to this conversation as they have all discussed prolapsed bladder, surgery, and recovery as well in the https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/i-am-looking-to-discuss-prolapse-bladder-or-any-kind-of-prolapse/ discussion. You mentioned in your post from 2019 that you were hoping to lose an additional 20 lbs, how has that weight loss goal come along since September?

@misssassy That was not really stressed to me either but it was mentioned after I lost weight, and it did help, but it didn't help enough. I still have problems and had a Botox injection and plan to have another.

WOW, JK, BOTOX ! I DIDNT KNOW BOTOX WAS A REMEDY ! AN INJECTION ? WHERE ? VAGINALLY ? WILL BE MOST INTERESTED TO HEAR INFO ON THIS ! MY CURRENT WEIGHT LOSS HAS HELPED SO MUCH I AM GOING TO TRY TO LOSE EVEN MORE MORE AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY. GET DOWN TO A SIZE 8 OR 10. SEE IF THAT HELPS EVEN MORE. WILL BE LOOKING FOR YOUR FEEDBACK ON BOTOX. THANKS , SALLY

@misssassy first they do testing to determine if your incontinence is the type that will be helped with Botox. If it is, they numb you and then do many shots. The procedure does carry with it a high risk of a UTI. My urogynecologist gave me five antibiotic pills to hopefully prevent one from happening. I did still get one, but it was easily treated.
The Botox did help, more during the day than at night for some reason. I have to drink a large amount of fluid to offset a medication I am on. It was 80-100 ounces a day so that of course really caused me to have to urinate a lot at night. Now I am down to 60-70 ounces, more doable and fewer nighttime bathroom visits.
