Cyclic Alternating Pattern (CAP) Sleep Disorder

Posted by fionagent @fionagent, Aug 16, 2019

Is anyone being treated for Cyclical Alternating Rhythm brain pattern which may cause a sleep disorder? My 23 year daughter suffers from fibromyalgia and has very poor sleep quality.
She has tried various sleeping tablets with no success. Would value hearing from other people with this disorder.

Hello @fionagent, Welcome to Connect. I have obstructive sleep apnea but have not heard of cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) sleep disorder. I was able to find the following information that may be helpful until other members are able to share their experience with CAPs.

PubMed - The cyclic alternating pattern as a physiologic component of normal NREM sleep.

Has your daughter been seen by a sleep medicine doctor?

Hi, @fionagent - I wanted to join @johnbishop in welcoming you to Mayo Clinic Connect. That must be disheartening that your daughter has not experienced any success from sleep medications.

Is your daughter's doctor connecting the fibromyalgia and the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP)? How is she functioning in the daytime?

Hi Lisa the doctors have not connected the fibro and CAP. They do connect the fibro and insomnia. The CAP was identified when we did a polysomniograph. The doctors have been unable to treat her insomnia and are not sure of the significance of the CAP. We live in South Africa and have been unable to find a sleep specialist who can help

Hi, @fionagent - that is challenging that your daughter's doctors have been unable to treat her insomnia thus far. As you mentioned they have made a connection between her fibromyalgia and her insomnia, I thought I'd tag a few members who have talked about fibromyalgia to comment on whether they (or their loved one they have mentioned who has it) have experienced insomnia, such as @sandytoes14 @mamacita @graceandpeace @astaingegerdm @airey2 @noydb, and if so, how they have dealt with it.

What types of medication or other sleep therapies has your daughter tried thus far, fionagent?
