Plantar Fasciitis: How did you get rid of it?

Posted by peggyn @peggyn, Jun 22, 2019

I don't know if this is where this should be posted, but I have a few questions. Almost seems like it goes hand and hand with neuropathy.

Have you had it and how did you get rid of it. I have done 2 injections.. I use ice and ice bottle almost nightly, I've massaged, I've purchased special shoes, and I've worn compression sleeves, plus I've done the night splint.. It just won't go away. I know it's because of the atrophy on that calf.
If you've had it please share what worked for you to get rid of it.

Hi @peggyn, there is another discussion talking about plantar fasciitis that you might want to read here:

Hi Peggy,
I moved your discussion to the Bones, Joints & Muscles group because I think you'll get more responses here. Your first response will be from me. I had plantar fasciitis in my left foot for almost a year. It took such a long time to get rid of, which was quite discouraging. Mine was exacerbated by tight calves. Here's a menu of things I did to help get rid of it:
- Calve muscles stretches multiple times throughout the day
- Always wearing footwear with good arch support, even indoors
- Massage the bottom of my foot by rolling it on a frozen water bottle with as much pressure as I could stand
- Flexing my foot during the night whenever I woke or in light sleep

It took persistence and patience. (I was sorely lacking in the patience department) Finally after almost a year, it was gone. I continue to stretch and wear good footwear to prevent another episode. So far so good.

Can you do anything for the atrophy that would also help the fasciitis?

I had PF in both feet, luckily not at the same time! The first time I did all the recommended things for 1 year with no success finally resorting to a steroid shot which worked. When I got it in my other foot I got a steroid shot right away and again it worked. I have been told different things regarding causation but I do try to remember to do calf and foot stretches plus I do exercise and walk regularly which I’m sure helps. Knock on wood it has not returned. I do have tight muscles to begin with, (chronic TMJ and neck pain)

How is your plantar fasciitis, geez I know how you feel. I have had it in both feet at the same time. I am feeling for you right now! Did you get the injections? I did and it made it disappear for about 6 weeks. I agree with all of the above but I would add that I found some gel sport inserts for my shoes that made a huge difference. My local doc told me to order these ones on amazon that were memory foam, didn’t help at all. But I saw these really cushy ones at a TJ Max store that were gel and said for plantar fasciitis, with nothing to lose I bought them, then I went back and bought another pair, then a different brand, until I had them in all of my regular shoes. They all had a few things in common, a hard plastic support base with a cut out for the heel and varying density gel cushion for the entire foot. I can’t say they helped heal my feet, but they sure made my daily activities a lot less painful. Please let us know how you are doing. Good luck

I have done everything.. I use ice every night and sleep with a splint.I have all sorts of inserts, but none of them help much. I also have purchased some of those special compression socks with the toes out for pf. I have had injections 2 different times. The Dr. said some people have as many as 4 injections in a fairly short period of time.I went to foot solutions and am getting special orthotics .They will be ready this week.I'm beginning to think it is more than pf. It is on my bad leg that has so much nerve damage and I have no muscle in my calf. I hope it is pf that I can get to get better.I walk with a limp because of my leg and hip and the pf makes it even worse. I can't believe it hurts so bad..Is the inserts you got just for the heel or the whole foot?? Do they have a name that you can remember??

I also have some other issues, and I cannot say it is gone, but it is bearable. The inserts are a whole foot insert that has a hard plastic support for the foot, the hard plastic is cut out under the heel. Then it has a varying density gel for the whole foot, and it has a covering over that. The brand I like the best is peak. I bought them at a TJ Maxx for 7.99. I have also bought dr scholls variety with heel cut out, but they were not great. I learned a few tricks in physical therapy too. First, she taught me how to tape which really cuts the pain so you can do your stretches. I couldn’t explain it but it is worth asking your doctor or therapist about. Next up was sitting in my chair and using a tension band to stretch my feet in every direction, don’t forget to flex your toes up as far as you can a few times, each time you do them. Lastly she taught me to practice balance. Standing on one foot for 3 minutes, which I really had to work up to, then the other foot. I don’t know how much of that will or won’t help, but I can tell you my Pf is do able, and prior to this it was otherworldly painful. Good luck.

what worked best for me was standing on the edge of the step and lowering the heel. I figure you have done that . It took close to a month but i noticed it slowly getting better. I do wear a sock at night and that seems to help.

I've developed a sore right foot, does anybody else have this issue? It maybe plantar fasciitis. It sounds like the situation in this article:

I suppose it's something to discuss with my primary care provider? This article doesn't outline looking for a foot specialist?

Don't walk!
If you choose to ignore this invaluable advice take along some cookies or candy.
It should help tremendously unless you like that nasty dark chocolate for which I think you do for reasons I'll never understand.
Anyway, I hope it goes away soon.
