Congenital Cataracts

Our grandson was just diagnosed with this. Has anyone experienced this? Will have surgery soon

Hi, @renm - How is he getting along with the patch? Is the rest of his development going okay?

He doesn’t like the patch. We think he gets frustrated a because he can’t see well with the affected eye. They don’t think he can see very far with it. It’s hard to know since he can’t say. He just turned 3 months. When he has the patch off he is generally pretty happy.

Poor little guy, @renm. That is tough that he appears frustrated with the patch, yet his doctor feels it is important for him. That is challenging with him being preverbal and unable to really communicate yet. How long will he have the patch?

How is it going with his contact?

Thank you for responding! The patch is to help make the affected eye stronger. So that is I defiantly. His contacts will change as he grows. They don’t use permanent lenses with babies so young as they would probably need more surgery.

Yes, eventually he will get a more permanent lens.

Hi, @renm - though currently we don't have other members who have talked about congenital cataracts, I wanted you to meet some other active members who have had cataract surgery as adults and will know something about your infant grandson's experience with having had cataract surgery and related therapy from their own. @renm I hope you receive some answers I had both mine out later on in life they weren't congenital but the surgery was a snap I went home same day from the clinic I went to.. Of course you have to use drops afterwards antibiotic drops but it cleared up my vision. Good luck to your grandson

Hello. I'm sorry to hear of your baby grandson's misfortune. My cataracts were done in my forties which is a far cry from infancy. It was a safe and fairly simple procedure, one which I don't remember and that little guy won't either. I wish him all the best going forward in hopes of good vision.
