If you're not a member and can't make it to the conference this year I encourage you to find, join and support an HLAA Chapter. Chapters are active across the country and all share the same mission to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.

@mike55124 I agree with the other Mike - getting involved with a Chapter will open you to many new ideas that might help you live with your hearing loss, no matter the level of loss. In addition, it will give you plenty of opportunities to give back to the hearing loss community. For instance, I first learned about the Innocaption cell phone app at a Chapter meeting. This year I have taken an officer role in my Chapter and have been giving presentations to local senior centers about hearing loss and new technologies available,e for the hearing loss community. I also am on the committee for the PA Walk4Hearing.

I always come away from the Convention learning something new - usually 3 or 4 new things! My favorite thing to do, other than meet new people from other Chapters around the country, is to try out new assistive listening devices at the vendor Expo. Technology is changing every year and you never know if you will find something that will help you with your specific hearing loss needs.

I’m looking forward to the convention too! There’s always something new to learn and it’s so energizing I’m looking forward to the technology also. I’m always amazed at how many different types of people there are with different types of hearing loss and how their strategies to hear better vary greatly. Thinking I should check out the app HLAA2019 Convention site before going, to get an idea of the workshops. It’s available for download now in the App Store.

I would love to attend but just spent all my money moving to FL from WI....will have to wait another year. I have gone to at least 5 or 6 of them over the years as both attendee and presenter. They are fun, enjoyable and so much to learn from them.
I have been a member since 2004...a few years after I learned I was hard of hearing and got hearing aids.

Would have gone except that requires 2 flights for those of us on west coast- crazy. Am concerned about losing hearing as a result of flying - 4 flights total round trip is more than I am willing to risk. I attended 2 years ago in Salt Lake City and it was terrific - boo to the location selection committee for those of us on the west coast.

HLAA conventions are terrific opportunities to learn. HLAA does try to move them around the country as best they can. It was in Minneapolis last year, New York (Rochester) this year, New Orleans next year, etc. It has been in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Phoenix, Little Rock, Orlando, Milwaukee, St. Louis and several other places over the years. I like it best when it's in a location that isn't so hot you can't stand to go outside! Thankful HLAA moves it around. Wish it was always on an AmTrak route. 🙂

@wassy2019
I too am fearful of flying bc I only have one functional ear and don’t want to risk anything happening to it. I love to fly but have experienced extreme pain in my ears when descending. Thinking a blog about flying with hearing loss and ENT problems related to flying would be great.
