Long term memory loss

Posted by aarniek @aarniek, Apr 7, 2019

After 3 years of non stop symptoms, mostly physical, from a cold turkey from 8 mg lorazapam,i lost all my long term memory! I need to know it will come back,so has anyone out there lost their long term memory and had it return?( short term memory is good). Please let me know as we acquire memories we can share with our family & friends and with no memories ,i don't even remember my family or friends. Acquired intelligence and knowing how things work, are not affected either! I am now past 6 years since stopping my benzo.

I am slow tapering having been ct’d Years ago. Terrible hallucinations. I wish when released from hospital a doctor would have told me what to expect and maybe would not be where I am today. One common element I’ve found is a thyroid storm. See an ENT and have a thyroid test. (Free T3/t4). might help. Best wishes

Hi, @aarniek - good to hear from you. Did you end up reinstating your lorazepam, as you mentioned one neurologist you saw suggested? Are you still experiencing shaking?

Yes ,but it only seems to happen when i get upset,so i expect i am over sensitive to stress and not being on an anxiety medicine! The head pressure, severe head pressure along with 6+ years of horrific muscle tension that has made me unable to walk is all very stressful and no one has an answer! And no i never tried to re- instate lorazapam.

My neurologist told me " its there, you just lost access to it" seemed like his way of dodging the issue as he is responsible for my cold turkey and the never ending suffering that just gets worse every year. ( anyone know the difference between losing ones long term memory or losing access to it?

I know this is a late response, but he means that it is in your brain, but you can no longer retrieve it. A lot of good that does you! Forgive me, but I think your doc is a bit of a jerk to even say that to you. What good does it being there do you, if you cannot retrieve it. And he did not even bother explaining what he meant. Just stupid and useless on his part. I wish you well. I can not even imagine what you are going through. Lori Renee

I’ve never been able to remember anything from my childhood up to 12-13 years old (19 years old now) and was wonder if long term memory loss is even possible at my age? I drowned when I was 3 and was underwater for 3 mintues and was unconscious and was wondering if side effects could even occur after that? I don’t remember even bits or pieces it’s like that part of my life never happened I’ve tried multiple ways to help me get memory back but nothing has ever worked.

Hello, @sunshine45 - just wanted to let you know that I've moved your post on long-term memory loss here to this discussion, "Long-term memory loss," so you can interact with others who have also faced memory loss about your missing years of memory and whether memory loss is possible for a 19-year-old. They may also have some thoughts on the impact of your drowning incident at age 3 and whether memory loss could be a side effect.

Hoping that @aarniek @lorirenee1 @jakedduck1 @sirgalahad @hopeful33250 will have some input for you on this.

sunshine45, what have you tried thus far to try and get your memories back from your childhood up to age 12-13?

the drugs you have been taking there is quite a concern over the side effects and contraindications of lorazepam there is indications you should never go cold turkey or take this drug with other opioid meds .it can cause light headedness ,confusion memory loss and difficulty with breathing and death as its an anti anxiety meds so its acting on the hippocampus and the amygdala .these are memories and amygdala is an area where due too flooding of epinephrine the adrenal glands hormone increase levels of depression and anxieties. . by going cold turkey and stopping suddenly and its also a Benzo meds same group

I have just checked with mims pharmaceutical medication book we have list all meds and contraindications re meds its short term memory loss ,restlessness ,breathlessness headaches ,dizziness , difficulty breathing and death due to the sedative effects of this group of meds . I would be seeking a brqain scan or a dye scan to see or MRI TO SEE IF THERE HAS BEEN BLOCKAGE OR A CLOT AND VASCULAR ISSUES . TO LEAD TO LONG TERM MEMEORY BEING DAMAMGED
