What's your experience with dialysis? Give & get support here

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Mar 7, 2019

Dialysis is required if your kidneys don't function adequately on their own. Your doctor will discuss with you the type of dialysis that's best for you. Dialysis treatment is a serious responsibility, You'll need to work closely with your health care team who have experience in managing dialysis. Open communication with your health care team is essential to your overall health.

Fellow patients are a wonderful source of support and practical information because of a shared dialysis experience.
If you are a dialysis patient, or loved one of a patient, what are some things that you have experienced that might be helpful to someone who is new to dialysis? What kind of life adjustments have you had to make? How has it affected your everyday life?

To anyone who can help: Suddenly I'm not receiving notifications of posts by email. I don't think I turned that off, mainly because I don't know how. If someone can private message me how to get notifications of posts again, I'd appreciate it very much!

@hopeful33250, OT already has helped solve a couple of mobility problems re personal hygiene and is working on a platform for my recliner/bed. Nurse is good also, am very impressed with my hospital's home health services.

I think it is wonderful that your hospital's home health services are working out so well for you. @kamama94. What else do you hope to accomplish during your OT/PT?

@hopeful33250, my greatest fear isn't death or dying, though that's not high on my to-do list, but loss of independence and consequent self-neglect due to immobility. PT taught mme some muscle strengthening exercises to make pushing up to transfer a bit easier on my injured leg.

Oh, my word, @rosemarya, I thought the flag was to bookmark a post to refer to later. Is the flag sending messages to @colleenyoung???? If that's the case, no telling how many she's received from me.....Yikes!

@kamama94, I am right along with you on what you expressed. I fear becoming unable to make my own decisions about my life. Daily unrelenting pain and suffering, which you as a nurse and I as a long time caregiver, have brought me to the belief that we are sometimes more humane and merciaful in making decisions for our beloved pets and other animals than we are for human beings. Whatever we can do to maintain personal independence is a very good thing in my book. Sending you heaps of affection and strength.

@kamama94 Totally agree with you. I can get pain pills from the vet no problem because I do not want my Dobie to have any pain in his senior years. He’s 13 and a large breed dog so we are lucky we’ve had him this long. The “pink liquid” should be available to humans too. Why are we so merciful with animals but not humans. And my vet calls to follow-up on everything. I’ve told my vet I don’t get that kind of concern from my PCP and she said she hears that from a lot of her clients. Why is this? @hopeful33250 @lagrange5

@bustrbrwn22 Vet doesn't call but is readily available, so is PCP and so is neph, am very fortunate to be able to contact easily by email or phone. Buckey is slowing down, sleeping a lot, which labs do anyway. Still does the potty thing ok and still has that lab appetite but gets winded during playtime and I let him rest. If he's ever in pain, I'm braced to do whatever is necessary to alleviate his suffering painful though it might be for me personally. I wish elders in our society had the right to choose when and how to leave this world.
