PD Cath, Perm Cath and AV Graft, not working

Posted by wade59brown @wade59brown, Jan 31, 2019

Hi, I am new here, but at wits end, I have had 3 surgeries to have a PD cath work, then 3 times putting in Perm Cath, and they didn't work, now had AV Graft put in arm and worked for 4 days, clotted and had cleaned out yesterday at 1130AM but today at 930 AM it did not work again. Is there some where to get info that would suggest others have had troubles like I have. Any and all answers appreciated. Thank You

Hi @wade59brown, I can imagine you are at your wit's end with ongoing struggles to find a solution. I'm tagging a few members who have experience with peritoneal dialysis, like @gingerw @abel @mauraacro @rosemarya @ginal @ca426 and @aimeenc, and who may have some experiences with PD catheter, long-term hemodialysis catheter (permcath) or AV grafts.

What did you do this morning when the AV didn't work again?

The Dialysis nurse took the machine back to hospital and I am waiting to see what is next.

I haven't had those problems. I hope things get better for you

@wade59brown, I had a central venous catheter for emergency dialysis in my neck. It was replaced with another temporary access in my upper chest until I got my transplant. I am sorry that I don't know anything about your current situation. I do hope that your nurse will return it with some good news.

@wade59brown I have not been on dialysis, but my husband was for 5.5 years. Not everyone can tolerate a PD catheter for different reasons. Scar tissue in abdominal cavity, or other issues like pain on draining. I hope they can get to the reason for having the catheter clog.

Thanks for response, PD was my first choice and then a catheter was placed in my neck 3 different times and it would not work, too much pressure on the veins, then the last attempt was the graft in arm and that clots (plugs up) ,
