Hand tremors

Posted by basketcase @basketcase, Dec 8, 2018

Hi Im not sure if this has been discussed before please point me in the right direction if it has. I ve been having hand tremors for a few years now and I reckon its getting worse. I have been on Chlolipmarine Hydrochloride for about 20 years for anxiety, depression and obsessive thinking. They have always worked for me but i think one of the side effects is hand tremors. Ive had blood tests and all ok there. the Doctor suggested coming off the CH and trying Sertraline, which I did but just felt like sleeping all the time, so back to CH. Its like Ive got too much adrenaline! It is worse in company and at work even though Im not stressed or anxious. As Im typing this my hands are shaking. It doesn't stop me doing anything but its annoying and I often have to drink holding the cup or glass with both hands and my writing is awful. My Uncle had awful hand tremors but was also on antidepressants, my mother too but less so. Any advice would be most welcome.

@mrector

I just found this discussion. I had a craniotomy for a brain tumor removal on August 28th 2018 and have had hand tremors ever since surgery. The tremors are in both hands and very noticeable especially when eating. I won't see my neurosurgeon again until March, 2019. Could this be related to the brain surgery and does anyone recommend being seen before March?

Hello @mrector

I appreciate your post about hand tremors. As I am not a medical professional I do not know if this symptom is related to your surgery or not. I would, however, certainly recommend that you contact your neurosurgeon's office by phone and let them know of the tremors. If it is related to your surgery, there may be meds or other therapies that could help.

You said that you have had this tremor ever since the August surgery, is that correct? Have the tremors become worse over time or have they stayed the same? Do you have the tremors when your hands are at rest or only when you use your hands (as you mentioned when eating)? These are important facts to give your doctor's office when you call.

Will you post again and let me know how you are doing?

There are multiple drugs that will reduce your hand tremors: Clonidine, Propranolol, Lorazepam (all are generic and thus cheap). The first two are cardiac drugs and Lorazepam is a benzo.I have a mild tremor in my Rt hand. I take propranolol 20 mg in the morning along with 1mg of lorazepam. At night, I take lorazepam 1m and .2mg of clondine.

Thank you for the information. I'm new to the site, but am seeking information on ET treatments. I've had a mild condition of ET in my right hand for about 25 years. Now it's in both hands. I am having some difficulty writing checks, but otherwise function pretty well. I'm lucky compared to many who have had severe ET. I tried Propranolol many years ago, but did not like the side affects. I'm retired now so I might check into the other medications you have tried.

Hi, @jlind, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can imagine that would be challenging to have difficulty with your right hand for over 20 years, and now in both hands, affecting your writing.

Since the medication you tried for your ET (I'm assuming here you are meaning essential tremor) years ago had side effects you did not like, what does your doctor suggest trying instead?

@jlind- I have very similiar ET issues as you and for as long and my writing seems to be the only thing that has suffered greatly.
I've looked into several treatments and all were using another drug and decided against that for me.
Recently I met someone who told me that they have a family member who has ET that is a bit more severe than what I described I was dealing with and they said that Acupuncture was helping them quite a bit. I'm looking into that for me just to see if it will make a difference.

@mrector l seeing everyone is talking about hand tremors and it can be from a variety of reasons. I have it sometimes when my ammonia levels are high and slurred speech. When l see the neurologist they would say stretch out you hand and my hand will tremor. Also it can be a deficiency. Which l am anemic and l was listening to doctors who talk about low magnesium or b12 so you don't always have to be on drugs. And even sometimes if your hands are cold it can be low iron. I think sometimes we take so many drugs they are interacting with each otherand we are finding out it can be worst then better. I would talk to my doctors and have them see first are you deficient in something and maybe it might be changing what you eat or adding something to your diet. We are sometimes just over medicated. I have went down from a lot of meds because of recalls or it was affecting my liver or even allergic reaction. And now l am looking for healthy recipes to cook. Last night l cooked Turkey and kale soup and l added beans. I working with young children on how to cook healthier meals. We were never as sick as we are now. And l believe sometimes we are trying to find an answer to a medical problem and it's really just simple adjustment of our bodies.

I have dystonia (familial) from my Mom's side. Only takes one parent to transfer this monster to your children. My Mom came from a family of eleven brother and sisters. I have over 50 cousins. All of my aunts and uncles showed some form of hand tremors. Now I am witnessing my cousins with hand tremors. This is a monster disease.
