Crash

I have a question that I am assuming is a blood sugar issue. Years ago I had a doctor tell me I was insulin resistant. He said it in passing like it wasn't any big deal and never said another word about it. So, not knowing alot about it I just assumed I needed to watch what a ate a little better, cut out the cokes and M&Ms and I would be good. I have had other doctors since then and new endocrinologists who periodically check my blood glucose levels when they run other tests and always say everything looks good. But for the past year when I eat anything, especially in the morning but anytime I haven't eaten in several hours that is carb heavy like toast, within a very short time I crash...like can't keep my eyes open have to lay down kind of crash. When I wake up I am always so dehydrated and crave salt, anything with salt. Can someone please educate me a little in this? No one in my family has or has ever had blood sugar issues and it's not like you can search "carb crash sleep with salt cravings." Thanks in advance.

I have had the same experience if I eat high sugar items on an empty stomach. I become so tired that I have to sleep for at least 10 minutes, break out in cold sweats and feel light-headed. I do not have the salt craving. though. If I take my blood sugar with one of those home meters it is usually about 180 or so. So, to make a long story, short, I just avoid high sugar items and if I just must have them, I have them after a meal. This is just my personal experience, though, no doctor has told me to do this.

Do you use a home meter to check your blood sugar during those times?

No. I don't. If I did I definitely would have to learn how to read it. But that's ok. The sweating and cold is familiar. I have noticed a couple of times that after I have had something sugary but haven't eaten anything else I have experienced the same symptoms. Thank you!

Those meters are not difficult to use, quite easy actually and I'm speaking as a non-technical person. They are rather inexpensive and you can get them at a drugstore, like CVS, Walgreen, etc. I don't use it on a regular basis.

Hello, welcome to Connect. I often wake up thirsty, usually it means that my sugar is high. I am a type 2 diabetic. I am not a doctor, so I can only tell you what happens to me. I have the same type of crashes you are describing--I usually eat wheat bread instead of white and that has helped, and I try to lay off of the simple sugars/carbs as much as possible (things like: cookies, crackers, candy, white bread, potatoes, noodles, and chips). Even cutting back on those things should help you. When I manage to cut back on those foods, I feel much better--when I don't, look out!!!!! God Bless and best of luck to you!!!!!

@chocolate5lover It is interesting to know of others who have these crashes related to high sugar. I agree that I feel better if I watch my carbs and sugars as well.

How long have you been a Type 2 diabetic? Do you currently take meds?

I guess I didn't realize I was diabetic. No meds. But looks like when I have my endocrinologist appointment next week it's something we definitely need to discuss. Thank you
