Ongoing Chest Pain

Posted by kttormoen @kttormoen, Oct 17, 2018

A week ago, I woke up at night from chest pain. It was pretty intense and I thought it was heartburn. I took Tums, which always help, but they didn't help. The next day I went to my doctor. She did an EKG and it was normal. She prescribed Omeprazole for GERD. Even after days of taking it, I do not feel better. My chest pain is constant. It's minor but it moves around. For example, it is in the middle of my chest right now but has been on the left side and then the right side today as well. My cholesterol is normal, I am a 28 year old female, I am not overweight, and there is not history of heart issues in my family.

Sometimes I feel like my heart is fluttering. I've also been very tired and a bit dizzy. I am not sure if part of the cause of my symptoms is anxiety, but anxiety attacks don't typically last for days on end. I have a hard time focusing on anything lately because of my symptoms. I feel shaky too.

Please help me. I am not sure what is going on and I feel like my doctor doesn't think it's a big deal.

Im hoping that someone here has some advice or insight. Im 35, male, in good shape. I have been having daily chest pain for a couple months now. I'll use today as an example. All day I felt perfectly fine. Woke up early, got the kid off to school, and worked out. Rode the stationary bike for 60 minutes. Heart and chest felt fine for the entire time. Rest of the day went fine. Until around 1430. Sitting in a meeting I feel my heart flutter/skip a beat, and feel a tingle throughout my entire body. The feeling is extremely uncomfortable and unsettling. Along with a short spell of dizziness, I immediately have anxiety. 10 minutes later I continue to have chest burning/discomfort that continues on to my back, and headache. 10 minutes after that it starts to settle, but even 90 minutes later I still have chest and back discomfort and random palpitations (that I attribute to anxiety from the initial episode). This will probably last the rest of the day, or at least until I work out again. Thats the weirdest part to both me and my cardiologist. When my HR is elevated and I am working out, I feel fantastic. The majority of the time when I feel these cardiac episodes (all of the times I can think of), I am at rest. Pain and discomfort will radiate to my back, arms, neck, and jaw. Dizzy and lightheaded. A few months ago I went to the ER with one of these episodes. EKG was fine, troponin test was negative. ER doc said to follow up with primary. Primary performed another EKG that also came back normal. Referred to cardiologist, who ran multiple tests. Bloodwork showed nothing, Holter monitor showed some pvcs or pacs but nothing significant. Echo and stress test also didn't show anything significant. I can't seem to figure out what is going on, but I'm pretty sure is not gastro. Multiple antacids have offered no relief. I can physically feel my heart having these episodes when they happen. I don't know what to do, but the associated anxiety is horrible. I can't even go to sleep, because I am convinced that my heart is going to stop while I am asleep.

Also, I have daily headaches that can come with the episodes, or present on their own.

The first thing I would have them check for is Afib. I would get like this off and on for years. I was told I didn't have it. Then, they discovered during my last cath, I had Paroxysmal Afib. They told me that this is Afib that comes and goes so it's not something you experience on a daily basis. I hope this might help you. It's very possible you may have this.

My father is 63 years old, he started experiencing pains in the middle of his chest a few weeks ago, he was a smoker for 40 years or so and he quit before Christmas, the chest pains has become increasingly worse, he's experiencing shortness of breath and tiredness while performing basic activities, he went to the hospital Saturday and Sunday and had normal ecg and bloods and x-ray results, he was given referral to the cardiac clinic but I'm concerned, we don't know what's going on, the Dr's didn't say what could possibly be causing the symptoms.

That does sound concerning but i do know that the first year i had a caught and what i was told that was basically your lungs trying to get rid of the toxins. On the chest pains it might be either heart or lung and even muscle. Maybe all the caughing is giving him the pain. Don't give up tho it gets better and get answers on the chest pain from the drs. I quit in 2011 and im glad i did. I may not have been eligible for the transplant i received if i still smoked. On the shortness of breath that can also be heart or lung. How is he's oxygen saturation should be at least 90 or above.

Well he doesn't really have a cough though he started sounding nasally when speaking, on Wednesday he goes to the hospital to join the cardiac clinic so hopefully we'll find out something then.

Hi:
I also started having chest pain at your age 28, and I had every test imaginable and was told to see a shrink. It turns out that I have Small Vessels Spasms. I was diagnosed at the Cleveland Clinic in 2012.
It took me 36 years to get a diagnosis. I had a Heart Attack at the age of 63 years old. The spasms caused the heart attack but no heart damage. I would definitely call Cleveland Clinic Heart Department and make an appointment to see a Cardiologist. My Cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio is Dr. Stephen he is very familiar with women’s chest pain. I even went to the Mayo Clinic when I was your age but no diagnosis at that time. Women with chest pain and clear arteries is not something to fool around with. I am not saying you have SVS, but you definitely need to see a Cardiologist that specializes in women with chest pain and have all normal tests but continue to have chest pain.

36 years...I'm so sorry it took that long...and I'm sorry you were told to see a psychiatrist. My doctor immediately jumped to anxiety and seeing a psychologist. I wish they'd understand we know our bodies.

I have the EXACT issues that you are having. I feel so good after doing 30 minutes on the elliptical and some toning stuff. My chest tightens as the day goes on and I thought maybe it was my underwire. I’ll just be sitting on the couch and my heart flutters to where I have to cough. It’s like it takes my breath away. My chest is constantly tight for 2 months now. It all started with these pains that felt like someone was poking me with a poker under my left breast. Pain sometimes radiates throughout my body. I get headaches. Numbness and tingling in my left arm and sometimes my legs. Dizziness. I have gone to the doctor and of course he prescribed anxiety meds and told me to go to a “Behavioral Therapist”. My bloodwork Great, my heart function great. My resting rate is around 62. I went and got a mammogram, per doctor request, fine. I am going for a heart monitor next month. Yep, takes that long. I honestly feel like it’s a blocked artery but my doctor doesn’’t Want to do the tests. He said that if I feel that bad to go to the emergency room and they will automatically run all the tests. I am so frustrated!

Wow, he won't order the tests to see if an artery is clogged?! Seems like a stress test and ultrasound would be in order.

My friend was always complaining of chest pains but all the tests were normal. It turned out to be costochondritis.
Take care,
Jake
