Complicated diverticulitis

Posted by nosurgery @nosurgery, Sep 24, 2018

I've had 3 episodes of diverticlitis, the last one with microperforation. I'm trying to avoid surgery as I only have one kidney. I don't know what to do?

Hello @nosurgery and welcome to Mayo Connect.

I can understand your concern regarding contemplating surgery for diverticulitis when you have another major health issue, such as only one kidney. Has surgery been suggested?

You probably need to consider other health concerns that you have. For example, did you lose your kidney from a complication of another disorder, like diabetes? What is your age and what other health problems do you have?

If you have met with a surgeon already, what opinions have you gotten from a surgeon? What complications, if any, do they foresee?

I would urge you to seek the opinion of one or two surgeons. Approach those appointments in an interview fashion. Ask them about how much experience they have had regarding surgeries with your type of physical problems, etc. The more you are able to take control and be proactive the better you will feel about your decision.

Will you keep in touch and let me know how you are doing with this process?

Lost kidney 2ond to cancer. I've had breast cancer surgery, Chemo and radiation. I've had partial thyroidectomy. Other than that, very healthy ( sounds crazy, but I am). Have had one consult, this week is 2ond
Consult. Don't want colectomy. Holding out for a miracle!
