Hello: I made the connection to the hearing loss group because my wife does not hear all that well. Just recently I got her to accept the idea that I would get her a hearing aid for Christmas 2019. I am very proactive about health care and I have taken family to Mayo with amazing results. So I need to educate myself about hearing loss and treatment. You mentioned Audiologist and Otologist. Is the Otologist an MD? My wife's situation is she had an ear infection which the MD forty years ago said to keep cotton in your ear until the infection is gone. Wrong treatment she learned later after having hearing loss. So my question is does one see the Audiologist first and then see the Otologist if appropriate? Does one attempt to see the Otologist first? I am thinking at the very least a person needs to go to a hearing loss clinic that has both the Audiologist and the Otologist. We live near Indianapolis Indiana. Do you know or does Mayo have a recommendation for a clinic in the area? Your help would be appreciated.

So glad to hear that you are there for your wife. My husband has been my rock through my hearing journey and is an important part of my treatment. I too started losing my hearing in my late 40’s. I went to a local ent doctor and was then referred to audiologist for my assessment. After hearing the bad news, I went decided on hearing aids. It was my audiologist who proscribed them. They helped for several years but still could not capture high pitches and thus made speech hard to follow. Through the years I had 3 different kinds. Unfortunately my hearing kept deteriorating until my audiologist told me the only thing left was a cochlear implant. I just got one last summer and have no regrets.

Hi @engineer, I notice that you were directing this question to @jamienolson. If you put the member's @username in the message, they will get a notification that indicates there is a reply directed specifically to them (but the group can also see it and benefit from it). Now that I have mentioned Jamie, she will come and answer your questions.
