Liver and kidney transplant

Posted by noorlight @noorlight, Aug 27, 2018

Hello everyone,

I am glad that I found people who can help others based on their experiences because that what matters the most. My dad had undergone a liver transplant long time ago in Mayo Clinic. Now he is suffering from kidney failure and he started dialysis from last week the dr. asked him to stay in the hospital until they organize everything. He has diabetes from 10 years and high blood pressure as a result of kidney failure.
However I have few concerns about his situation, he lost his appetite totally and while he is on dialysis I want to know what kind of food I can cook him to help him get better, we met a dietitian but she talked in general I need a plan to follow. We are also planning for kidney transplant, but dad has anti bodies that makes it difficult to find a match and he refused to take it from me or my siblings. Is there any related risk to affect the liver while doing the kidney transplant ? and can the anti bodies be treated? for those who went through a kidney transplant how are you doing and how are you maintaining a healthy kidney? for living donors how does it feel like ( we are trying to convince him to accept my kidney)? is there anyone who went through liver and kidney transplant I need to talk to you.

Sorry for all those questions am a bit lost and I need help.

Hi @maximus232
Why were you denied? What is far away?

Hi @noorlight
You're right to ask questions.
I'm going to bring @rosemarya into this discussion. She also had a kidney and liver transplant and can share her experiences with you and connect you with others.
In the meantime, did you see this discussion about diet?

Hi, @noorlight, I am a liver and kidney recipient. However, unlike your dad, I received both organs at the same time. And . like your dad, I was on dialysis before my transplant due to kidney failure.
During my transplant period, I had no appetite and that was compounded with nausea and a diminished sense of taste. I used to use lemon juice or cinnamon to add some taste to the no sodium foods, and that tasted better to me. The nutritionist in the dialysis had me drinking a nutritional drink that was for dialysis patients. You might ask about that for your dad. I was motivated to eat, no matter how tasteless, because I feared the re-insertion of a feeding tube.
I want to also say that my taste preferences changed day by day. Have you asked your dad what would taste good to him?

@rosemarya thank you for your checking in on me. I've been quite ill (AGAIN) with nausea and stomach aches. Doctor now has me on Domperidone lansoprazole and Santa. Quite the cocktail. Also, I'm not sure about others but I have chronic insomnia. Average sleep is 4 hours. I don't nap during the day. I am on my third type of sleeping pill. Still waiting....

@gaylea1, While you are still waiting, I will still keep you in my thoughts and especially my prayers.
Inability to sleep was a big problem that I also experienced. And 4 hours sounds like about what I was able to get. Sometimes I napped, but mostly it was a matter of lying still and trying to think positive thoughts.
I also could not lie down, but 'slept' in a propped up position. And I spent much of the night pacing the floor with my labored walk because I hurt so bad. One thing that i enjoyed though was watching night shadows of tree branches that reflected on my ceiling, They would dance as the winter winds blew, and I let my imagination tale over.
One day at a time. Rosemary
