Melanoma Monday - My husband was glad he got screened for skin cancer

Posted by Jackie, Alumna Mentor @travelgirl, May 7, 2018

Just a reminder that today is Melanoma Monday. And a friendly reminder to make an appointment for a skin cancer screening.

My husband I still see him pouting like a baby. When I made him come with me last year for a skin cancer screening. The Dr says to him " You look like your only here cause your wife made you show up." Him yep I dont want to be here.Im fine.

Well guess who now shows up at her office every six months? MR. Pout Face Himself. He had a few precancerous spots that needed to be zapped.

Pout face has a history in his family of skin cancer. His father has had numerous skin cancer lesions. Mostly all on his face requiring chemo treatments.

Being diligent with skin cancer screenings will hopefully keep my husband from going through all the advanced treatments his Dad has had to recieve.
Remeber early detection is the best cure.

Jackie - what a great reminder for us all (including your hubby, a/k/a Mr. Pout Face). Thank you for this important post (with some humor to get our attention)!

Such a good reminder, @travelgirl. For our generation who grew up not using sun protection, this is so important. And skin cancer screening doesn't hurt a bit.

@colleenyoung @hopeful33250 . I went Monday for the skin cancer screening . I'm all good . But the Dr. who looked me over said, I need to have yearly screenings cause of my red hair and red skin tones. Plus I have used tanning machines in the past. I fried myself years ago in them too. I also grew up using a homemade sunscreen of of baby oil and iodine. My suntans usually consist of blisters and sun poisoning. Even to this day, I burn horrible.

I will say too, it was all people 50 and older getting screened Monday at the event. No young people. Wish I would of saw some there. Cause I worked with a few who were diagnosed in their 20's. Especially those who frequent tanning salons. They should be on the look out for suspicious moles and skin spots.

@travelgirl I certainly appreciate your sensitivity to this type of cancer. Yes, young people often fail to see the long term effects of their current activities. Unfortunately, wisdom often comes with age and by that time, much damage may have already been done. Wonder if there is a way to educate young people through Mayo Connect? (Hmmm, a thought starter for a new discussion?)
