Unknown medical condition: facial spasms, difficulty walking, fatigue

Posted by africa15 @africa15, May 2, 2018

Hello everyone, just trying to see if anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts on what my symptoms could indicate.

I have now been sick going on 3 months. I first began with Bell’s palsy ( 3rd time now) I also have facial spasms that continue to come and go. A few weeks later I started having difficulty walking. When I would walk my leg would buckle inward. As of a few days ago my right leg has now done the same thing. So now both my legs aren’t functioning properly. I also have fatigue and overall weakness. I have had countless MRI/CT scans and everything comes out remarkable. I have been to several neurologist and neuromuscular specialist and they still have no answer as to what it could be. Can anyone help!??

Hey @africa15. Are you seeing any improvement in your symptoms from the meds prescribed yet? It has likely not been long enough, but just wanted to check in with you and you please let us know what is going on.

Hello! I have seen slight improvement on the hemifascial spasm side of my face but not on the palsy side yet. Fingers crossed that it will continue to help both sides.

@africa15 I hope and pray that will indeed be the case. As a layperson, I would think that logic would suggest they are helping and it may simply take a little more time for their effectiveness be full on.

Hey y’all! I just got started on antibiotics and anti viral meds, but my symptoms did occur prior to these.

Hello @africa15

I would like to offer you a welcome to Mayo Connect as well! I am glad that you posted your concerns here. Sometimes when doctors prescribe meds it is to help with a diagnosis.

When my doctor was unsure about my Parkinson's diagnosis she did tests to rule out other possible causes for my symptoms and then prescribed the typical med used to treat Parkinson's. The idea was that if the symptoms improve with the medication, then the diagnosis must be Parkinson's. While it seemed like a rather awkward way to make a diagnosis that seems to be fairly typical in many situations.

I look forward to hearing how you are doing.

Teresa
