Pet care after transplant

Posted by jodeej @jodeej, Mar 25, 2018

We have 2 dogs and had planned to have our daughter and son-in-law watch them after my husband's transplant. I'm beginning to second guess that decision. They are more than happy to do, but our grandson is 2 and our dogs aren't used to being around little ones for extended periods. Does anyone know of places or programs that do short term fostering?

Hello @jodeej depending on where you live there may be a pet foster care facility available. I just did a quick search and found a website specifically for dogs here:

You might want to try a search in Facebook also or your local pet shelter.

@jodeej
I wonder if your vet would have any suggestions to offer. Rosemary

@johnbishop I've looked it up and pact is only in the Northeast. We're in Iowa. I haven't found anything here, but thank you so much for looking.

Where in Iowa? My son lives in Greenfield, and would probably be interested. He does short term care for friend's dogs.

@rmftucker we are by the Nebraska boarder, so that could possibly work. I talked to our daughter and she isn't concerned. She will keep an eye on them and either kennel them or put them outside if needed. Thankfully they have a big house with a big yard!

Just let me know if you need help, and I will let my son know so he can contact you.

Wondering if you can tell me what it means when you think you are smelling natural gas in your home but my husband doesn't smell anything. The gas company had been here and found nothing.
Thank you. Karen

@karensgarden, Welcome to Mayo Connect. This is an interesting question that you have asked. I am a volunteer mentor, and I am a liver/kidney recipient.

I first want to say that calling the gas company was a wise choice. We have had several incidences of smelling natural gas at our home. My husband does not smell it, either. Once the smell was traced to a recent weed spraying of a neighboring hay field. Another time, my neighbors and I were on a sniffing mission on our street where there had been recent utility digging. No leak was detected, either.

Have you recently purchased anything like a new mattress cover, or pillows, or tried a new cleaner?
Are either you or husband transplant patients? or on any medication that could cause change in sense of smell? I don't know if this might have any effect but it would be something to bring up to pharmacist or doctor.

Let me know your thoughts. Does this help you at all?
Rosemary
