Kidney stones

Posted by Gary, Alumni Mentor @gman007, Mar 9, 2018

I am usually trying to help folks understand their symptoms, but need some myself now. I have chronic pancreatitis and have had it long enough that the way that pain manifests itself is pretty familiar. I have been experiencing a pain that is about an 8 on the typical 1-10 scale, but is more in my flank and lower than where my pancreas pain is. It is also very tender to the touch and if I move in any way that involves my torso the pain screams at me. I take pretty stri=ong opiates for my pancreatitis, so the pain is not being affected by those meds or if it is, I would be crying without them. Anyone have any thoughts? I already have had a urinalysis and it is not an infection in kidneys, bladder, or urinary tract. I am thinking kidney stone, but have never had the pleasure, so that is simply a guess.

For me I never drank 2 litres a day like instructed. But I did find that once I got over my water-ist attitude and started actually guzzling it against my will, I got more thirsty. So I have become a better water drinker because I became more thirsty when I started drinking it more. I think something happened in me where I became more aware of the feelings in my throat and mouth. I was tuning in when I thought I was already listening. Guess my body just turned up the volume in the chatter dial once I said, bloody hell. If I don't start drinking more water right now I will keep getting this pain-worse-than-childbirth for the rest of my days. It was after the 3rd ambo trip into emergency that I got the message. All the best.

@remaghdia Hi Marnie, thank you and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It is interesting to read your experience with kidney stones, and how they were resolved. You did exactly what we do here, that is, share your symptoms and experience, and what the outcome was for you, what worked for you. Since each person is different, it helps to hear different perspectives. I had a kidney stone once, several decades ago, that resolved without intervention, but the pain was indescribable. My father was prone to kidney stones, but I never found out if they were calcium or uric acid based. He went through lithotripsy and stents, also. So, how much water a day are you drinking, now?

@remaghdia
Waiting for a surgery date. Sounds like they will use a laser.

My surgery is set for Sept 19th.
They want me to go to the hospital for the preop and all and I balked. They keep you most of the day for 30 minutes of tests. Absolutely no since in wasting peoples time like that, I told her, my time is valuable too. I told them I wanted my doctor to do the preop. The gal says “That’s not the way we do it.” I told her “Maybe you need to change your procedure” which got her in a snippy mood so she says , so you don’t want the surgery? I finally asked her to ask the doctor if I could go to my own doctor who knows my history and can order whatever tests she feels necessary. They told me if they can’t get it all in an hour and a half to two hours they will schedule another surgery. I want that stent out of there. It’s painful to pee and the urgency, oh boy, the slightest urge and I’m on the run. Haven’t always made it either.

So, Jake, did your surgeon approve the preop to be done locally? Will you still be having the surgery as planned? I sincerely hope that you have a successful procedure.

Hi Rosemary,
I didn’t mean to ignore you but I just got out of the hospital. I had some seizures. I haven’t heard from the doctor yet. I don’t know why it matters who does the preop.

@jakedduck1 I hope the seizures were not enough to delay any pre-op or surgery? And hope you are feeling better today.

@jakedduck1 Hi, Leonard! I’m sorry you’re still dealing with this kidney stone thing! Has the hospital said why they want to do the pre-op tests? Do they have different lab standards than the doctor’s office? Maybe you’ll just have to be the bigger person, and say “OK, we’ll do it your way.” Just get the stint out!! We want more jokes!

I have a 22mm stone in my left kidney. My urologist wanted to do PCNL procedure, but said that the stone is in a such a location that PCNL is not an option. He said they could do ltihotripsy, but doesn't like that option since the stone is so large. Therefore, he is referring me to MAYO. What do you think the doctors at MAYO can do that my doctor could not. Thank you
