Skeletal muscle stiffness

Posted by aarniek @aarniek, Feb 22, 2018

As soon as I stand,my muscles in my shoulders, back, and legs contract ( stiffen) and I can barely walk! Even sitting ,my head and neck muscles are involved! I have tinnitus too! Been trying to find anything that helps for 5 years now!

@aarniek, have you seen a physician about the stiffening muscles? Myotonia is the inability to relax muscles at will. Does this description of myotonia describe what you're experiencing? http://www.myotonic.org/skeletal-muscles-symptoms

That sounds difficult having a frightening challenge simply getting to the next room, @aarniek. I think that @noosat1 @johnbishop @jenniferhunter @beryl may have some thoughts on this problem you are having with the stiffness in your muscles and trying to figure out what may be going on.

So, when you stand are you still experiencing the stiffening in the shoulders, back, and legs, aarniek? How are you getting through this to be able to move around? Does it go away if you wait, or do you have to push through?

@amberlynne5 - are you continuing to deal with stiffness, as well? If so, have you gotten any further answers?

This is unreal and how can it be worse every year? Its totally disabling as getting to the next room many times requires help! How can i put this burden on my wife and i actually have to get into a car in the garage as i scream out in pain and frustration not wanting her to see or hear me! I see no one on any benzo site as bad as me. Might be age?(81) but i don't know how i will make 82. Several doctors and no help there as ALL medicines make me even worse !

Fingers ,not affected ,only back, shoulder, head& neck, slight issue with leg muscles,as it seems leg muscles may be contracting enough to cause the tingling in my ankles and feet.

@aarniek what I could suggest is an evaluation from a physical therapist who also does myofascial release. Your body and spine will change position between sitting and standing, and most of us sit too much. This causes the hip flexors to tighten up, and when you stand up, the tightness between the pelvis and lower spine increases. It's very common in older adults, and my dad went through this too. He was also very stooped over which put extra pressure on his back. If you don't have the vertebrae lined up an nicely stacked on each other and sharing the work, the muscles that are doing most of the work complain. There are problems that happen with a tight pelvis that does cause leg pain and tingling. You might want to look at the discussion about Myofascial Release for information. When we do the same things all the time with our body in the same position, it kind of gets stuck that way, and the fascia tightens up, MFR can release the tight fascial tissue and allow the body to move better and get into better posture and less pain. I'm guilty of bad posture too and have learned my lesson. I do MFR therapy for a nerve compression issue in my neck and shoulder which helps a lot, and did this in recovery after spine surgery for release of surgical scar tissue. There is a provider finder on the myofascial release website. (See our discussion).
