Hi sandilee. Gout (build up of Uric acid crystals) and Hallux rigidus (arthritis of the big toe) are two different things and require two different courses of treatment. Sometimes the inflammation and discomfort can resemble each other, but they are different when you look closer. You should see your doctor about the pain and inflamation. Soaking the foot in cool water and elevation may bring some relief for the short term, but definitely see your Doctor to have it evaluated and diagnosed one way or the other. This was the advice Justin gave to me, and he was correct in leading me that direction.

Thank you! Yes very good advice to see the doctor. I was hoping it would go away on its own. It's not as painful today but I still can't put pressure on it and it is swollen. I will see the Dr. next week unless it gets worse. I soaked it in a foot message with heat, then I iced it and have been taking Advil for the pain. A little relief but not enough. Keep us posted on your progress.
