RLS my living nightmare!

Posted by shiner58 @shiner58, Jun 1 3:49am

What else can I do? I’ve struggled with RLS since I was a kid. It’s got increasingly worse over the last 10 years. I’m 68 non drinker, non smoker, and no recreational drugs. I’m on gabapentin and Ropinirole at the present time. I also have a sleep apnea machine monitor by a Neurologist specialist. I cannot take iron because it causes a severe constipation in my body even if I take it along with magnesium. Magnesium worked in the beginning, but doesn’t work anymore. These last two months have been a living nightmare for me. I am literally up all night long. I have to stand to get relieve. I’m wearing down emotionally and mentally. I’m taking the max dose of Ropinirole now and the only thing that seems to give relief is taking more of it or more gabapentin which my doctor advised me not to do. I walk my neighborhood in the middle of the night so I don’t have to just stand. Deep massage rarely works. Sometimes deep heat will work, but only while I have the deep heat meaning if I stand in the shower, sit in a hot tub full of water I’m beginning to be super sensitive to air conditioning. I have lost 85 pounds this past year while taking Zepbound that was prescribed to help with the restless leg and even though I’ve lost that weight, the restless leg has not gone away. I’m curious if anyone has found a diet or any natural remedies that help? Hot tubs or sauna? Compression pants?

I took Gabapentin 300mg at 6.30 pm then another 300mg at 7.30 pm then at 9 pm took 50mg of Trazodone. The RLS weird dreams and burning kept waking me up. I thought by only taking 600mg of gabapentin I would be better than the other 300mg making it 900 mg that is what I normally take but I an sedated most of the next day. If I take the 900mg and trazodone I get better sleep but the next the groggines is too much. Seems I cant win. So confused how to get sleep with being sedated the next day.

My leg cramps or RLS was hereditary. My Father(born 1912) had this. And I also have RLS.
My Father and I used Quinine. Yup Quinine. I will be 70 next month and I swear by it.
I worked 12 Hr. night shift's all through my career in healthcare. On my feet all night and coming home to leg cramps that were severe.
Quinine.

@sharshy have you tried 0.5 mg of pramipaxole? It’s a miracle, two hours before bed, please ask your dr, it works! Natalie

Quinine does work for RLS…I took it for a few years. Then my doctor told me enough…quinine for that length of time will cause ringing in the ears. He switched me to Clonazepam which worked perfectly. Then in the 2016 DEA scheduled drugs hysteria my different doctor (I moved) refused to prescribe it for me. Not because it was bad for me but because he was afraid that the DEA would revoke his prescription license.
Ever since then I have tried dozens of different medications, none work well, I always feel groggy and I hate the government for doing this to me.
