Worried about the safety of bone building meds.

Posted by helmit @helmit, May 30 7:05am

My doctor says I should go on a bone Building medicine like a biphosphate but I'm afraid of it. It's going to hurt my liver or my kidneys and I definitely don't want GERD.. I got it when I started using Faso Max and had to stop that so I'm afraid to start anything now what to do. My doctor is begging me to take something.

@dbamos1945 United Healthcare(my insurance) will not cover Evenity. Can you share how you paid for the monthly injections?
I’m 64 and will go on Medicare & some type of secondary insurance in the Fall

@meitene616 I just went thru exactly this.....UHC as a supplemental plan would not cover the Evenity either. The Finance office at my Rheumatology provider submitted the paperwork necessary to get me Tymlos for free from the mfr. I felt so blessed since no other medical provider had ever advocated for me - NEVER !!!! (My plan = UHC via AARP FYI). Research will be the ticket to success ! HUG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Helmit! You might investigate Evenity injections 1/month for 12 months - it is touted as the most recent& best Bone Building Osteoporosis treatment. I just finished my 12 months and looking forward to seeing DEXA results. I researched the group of Osteoporosis drugs cautiously bc I have liver issues and always leery of kidney harm (I also have heart concerns).
There is a BlackBoxWarning for Evenity for heart; I think this warning is overblown and they will remove it. You need to talk with docs, but more importantly patients on whatever drug you are considering - then make your decision. Few drugs have no side effects - Evenity’s were: occasional light headache, little twinges on bones from torsos to toes that went away quickly. If I felt a little achey after the injections I would take a nap. Sometimes an ice or heating pad felt good. But Nothing I ever felt I needed to call the doc & complain about!
I wanted strong bones and to lessen my odds of fracture… for me this is worth a small ache along the treatment route.
Please do your research, make your plan and give your treatment all the positivity you can muster. I know you can do this.

@dbamos1945 What does your doctor suggest you do after Evenity? I really don't want to take Reclast but that is what mine is suggesting I think.

@gravity3 My Evenity was covered since it was in the hospital infusion clinic and I was taking it for osteoporosis not osteopenia.

@ceciliabaker: I have decided on Fosamax 70 mg pill 1/week to seal in my Evenity strong bones.
There is a couple reasons I decided on this drug: Fosamax is a weekly dose - if there are any physical reasons this will clear my body quickly vs. 6mo or annual infusions. Fosamax has been used successfully for many years - it has good response.
Fosamax is said to be a more inexpensive drug, but has a good reputation.
Drug decisions are a very individual decision. I believe in doing my own research, learning from other patients and “gut feelings” before I agree to my docs recommendation for osteo health.
Time will tell… good luck!

My Dr suggested. Evenity
I fell and fx back. But only minor pain or no physical restrictions. Dextra showed only osteopenia numbers. I only had minor oa pain . My Dr recommendedvEvenity as the 3 yr of Reclast did not improve numbers. But after 10 months of Evenity
My pain trippled in left side and leg and
I could not walk let alone do my favorite gardening. After multiple PT attempts I could not bare weight WITH OUT PAIN ON LEFT. Left foot wit collasped arch the
Xray revealed left femur drop and push into acetabulum. I completed Evenity than use Reclast x1 .
Had Side effects of cortisol thickening in left thigh femur area.
Never again will I use ant medical bone builder.
I now require an anterior left hip replacement . My dancing days are gone

@jdshep

I am so sorry that you are suffering. I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying that the need for a hip replacement is due to evenity/reclast or both?
If so, how was this determined?

I’m terrified of all the osteoporosis drugs. I have rheumatoid arthritis and have read horror stories about extreme bad side effects that last for month or years. My endocrinologist and rheumatologist want me to take Reclast or Tymlos. I can’t take the oral drugs due to having GERD. Anyone have RA and have taken any of these drugs without suffering long term serious side effects?

They all worry me, too. And here is a new angle I read from a preventative medicine researcher:
