Vertigo

Posted by lisabeans @lisabeans, Apr 18, 2017

Hope all is well with everyone. I just finished testing with my primary and I do have vertigo. She said therapy may help relieve the dizziness. I do have pills to take to help some of the dizziness. Just wondering if this is common with people who have autoimmune diseases? Has any one done physical therapy for vertigo? Did you get good results?

I had covid for the 2nd time in June 2025. On June 30, I stood up and the room started spinning. I fell back down on the couch just hoping it would go away, but it didn't and I ended up at the ER not knowing what was happening to me. I was diagnosed with vertigo, which I was told is usually preceded and probably triggered by a virus. I was given meds and PT was recommended. I'm not sure that the PT helped, but I guess it didn't hurt. They do have specific therapies for vertigo. It took a month plus to feel manageable without the meds.

Hi, A very good friend of mine had a flu shot and didn't know he had COVID at the time. He began having dizzy spells so severe he had to stop driving with his young son in the truck with him. His son, 11 yrs. old, had to try and flag someone down for help. My friend was rushed to the hospital . He began having the same type of symptoms you explain. After a few trips to the ER and appointments with several specialists he was diagnosed with POTS caused by the COVID. When he would change positions or try to stand up his heart rate would drastically increase and he would become critically dizzy. Then he was also diagnosed with Arythmia attacks caused by the long COVID and POTS. He was off of work for at least a year and gradually tried to return to work. He has occasional episodes now and I don't think he will ever be the same. It's been three years now. He's in his mid forties and was in incredible shape and exercised in his gym every day. He absolutely cannot have anything with caffeine in it. He has tried several meds although nothing has really helped.
I must say that he is about 75% better than he initially was. He's back to work full time and works ten hour days.
I wish you the very best! Take care ❤️

I'm glad he's doing better. I was diagnosed with PMR in March after having symptoms since October. My rheumatologist sent me to a hematologist/oncologist because of some flags on the blood work he ordered and I was also diagnosed with SMM a few weeks ago. I'm now in the process of a fast prednisone taper so that my SMM can be fully evaluated for risk.

But what if the dizzyness (or BPPV) is unrelated to any ear issue but rather by a damaged eye muscle (caused by a concussion)? Following orbital floor surgery, I developed diplopia largely corrected by prism glasses but from all I've been told, the damaged eye muscle is not coordinating properly with the brain... result....constant dizzyness. Had multiple CT scans, MRIs and other tests as well as 12+ visits to concussion doctors, neurologists, orthopedists and neuro orthopedic MDs. Nothing positive learned. Vestibular and Visual PT did not help. Am reluctant to take heavy duty meds and I have been told that because the eye misallignment is so slight, surgery is not possible. Now what?

@sfkak Now that's scary! I did fall a few years ago and bump my head--CT-scan showed no damage; however, dizziness is bad. Perhaps it is "eye related." I recently had cataract surgery (both eyes) but I guess that has nothing to do with an eye muscle. If I can remember to do so, I will mention this to my eye surgeon. Thanks.

I've been hospitalized with vertigo twice. Yes I had PT for vertigo and it did help.

I hope the physical therapy works for you. I know treatments can be different for each of us and may or may not work. If you want to do some in depth reading, I did a search on "vertigo physical therapy" on Google scholar - https://scholar.google.com/ and came up with a lot of information. Here are the search results - http://bit.ly/2nZSx9f. You can also refine by using the links on the left to show by dates and more. You might be able to do a search there with different keywords and find some information more relevant.

Good luck!
John
