How long does Reclast remain in your system?
I received the Reclast infusion 4 mo. ago. I experienced mild fatigue and headache afterwards, but overall did pretty well. However, about a month later, I started experiencing back pain that was so bad it hurt to ride in the car. Aleve helped a little, but I could barely walk when I got out of the vehicle. The ability to walk improved with movement. After a month or so, the back pain subsided, but then the foot pain began and is continuing to be a problem. After sitting for a bit, it is painful to walk. Again, it gets better with movement. After x-rays showed no visible problems with my feet, the podiatrist believes the pain is a side effect from Reclast.
I have also gained about 8 pounds since the infusion even though my eating and exercise habits remain the same. Has anyone else experienced weight gain?
How long does it take for Reclast to get out of the system?
How long do these long-term side effects last?
Will my body return to its normal weight when the medicine is out of my system?

@gently I researched lower doses of Reclast and found studies were indeed done with lower doses. I gave my endocrinologist the links to the studies. She then prescribed Zometa which is really 4 mg of Reclast. Studies suggested it was just as effective as Reclast 5 mg. I got that last year with no problem. It helps that I am a retired medical professional .

1 Reaction@karenjaninaz Can you share links or references to the studies you did showing Zometa is as effective as Reclast? Thank you if you can, but don't worry if you can't.
AI information comparing the two dosages is a bit confusing. I think the reason AI views Zometa as the "higher dosages" is because it is often administered more often when used with cancer patients, i.e., it may be given 2 or 3 times in a year as opposed to Reclast being given annually.
Bottom line, though, is that Zometa is 4 mg and Reclast is 5 mg. Hope I am not confusing people, but I have heard clinicians refer to Zometa being a higher dose than Reclast and it is not. It's only the scheduling of the infusions that would increase the dosage over time.
Here is what Google Ai says when comparing the two:

Zometa and Reclast both contain the same active ingredient, zoledronic acid, but they are used for different conditions and dosages. Zometa is typically administered at higher doses for cancer-related issues, while Reclast is used for osteoporosis at lower doses, making direct comparisons of effectiveness at lower dosages not applicable.

2 ReactionsKaren, the studies were done through Novartis and though these studies were clear that 4mg is as effective as 5mg, they decided to market at 5, perhaps for the market advantage advantage of advertising as an osteoporosis medication, making less obvious the available generic options.
Zoledronate was only approved for osteoporosis after the studies by Novartis in 2007. Prior approval was only for cancer related bone conditions: metastasis and hypercalcemia of malignancy or multiple myeloma as Zometa.
It doesn't help that I have no medical background. I hope you keep posting with your medical knowlege.
