Just wanted to share a bit of my experience & I hope it helps you & others.
Diabetes is HARD!! Im 67 & have had type 2 for 30 years. Mine is connected to & affected by my autoimmune diseases.
Over the years Ive had luck with good control but there have been long periods where I went into Diabetic denial & burn out. Not good.
It is alot of work, got tired of not having my carbs, always planning, cooking.
Fast forward to this whole spring. I ended up in the ER at Mayo Clinic in a huge firestorm of a somewhat dangerous new autoimmune disease. It affected multiple organs. My blood sugar was so high for weeks even though I couldn’t eat & kept having to take more insulin.
After 2 weeks finally the amazing doctors got me well enough to go home on 5/1.
While in the hospital, with all the different specialists, the Endocrinology team worked with me on scheduled meals , different meds, etc, & since coming home I have decided to make a commitment to keeping up with this. I have to be aware of anti inflammatory because of all the autoimmune issues so I eat 3 meals a day & a snack that are balanced with protein , healthy fat & carbs undet 50 g per meal for energy from fruit, veggies & whole grains gluten free, sugar free. I cannot tell you what a difference this had made to how I feel. It is a dramatic difference & this is the positive momentum I needed to stay committed. I don’t ever want to feel that sick again & refuse to waste the lessons learned out of this scary situation so I will make the effort to do what I can to stay well. The other health stuff is not ad easy but this I can control.
I had to make it simple due to still recuperating. Here’s a sample day for me:
Breakfast is usually an egg, steel cut oatmeal with fresh berries & walnuts.
Lunch is usually a fresh mixed salad with meat involved, either leftover chicken or tuna, cold lean beef & a little cold brown rice.
Dinner is usually a protein on tbe grill with fish included a couple of times, chicken, pork & s little red meat for my anemia.
Snack before bed is either a low sugar yogurt like Too Good or cottage cheese with a little fruit & nuts.
The food actually tastes fresh & good! But if shopping & cooking is hard at times there are some good meal delivery services that do healthy diabetic foods. It can be pricey but I always ask myself if my health is worth it. Being unhealthy is expensive too & we don’t eat out hardly at all.
I feel so grateful that I am healing and I want that for others that are struggling cuz Ive been there way to often too.
I hope you can find a good Endocrinologist & ask for help from the Diabetic Educator. They are so willing to sit with you & talk about food planning & meds. Very helpful!
