Wife has severe hip pain and most likely sciatica

Hi -
My wife has suffered from lower back pain for the last ten years. She takes pain killers, but remains to be very active in exercising. She is 44 years old.

She has been to doctors here in Wisconsin where we live, but there's always been dead ends in terms of more invasive treatment. She sees a chiropractor every other week to help her pain.

Recently, she is feeling more pain in her right hip and Psoas muscles. She is going to begin PT in about six weeks.

Have any of you been through this? Is it mainly Sciatica causing this?
Does anyone have some methods or a course of treatment that really helped them?

I had horrible sciatica pain a few years ago and went to PT. After a few weeks I continued to do the exercises on my own at home and have been sciatica free since that time. Best of luck. I would have more faith in PT than what a chiropractor can do.

My husband has had sciatica. What is working is steroid injections. The first one brought immediate relief it only for three months. The second has given him relief for two years

The exercises for sciatica are several and I cannot describe them in words. I am sure a physical therapist can teach them to you as they did me years ago. Best of luck for pain relief.

Two ideas:

My husband had terrible sciatica. Pt did not work him. I wonder now if we should have been looking for a pt with a doctorate and ask for their specific training and experience working with sciatica.
What finally helped was his second cortisone shot. First one didnt work but after the second 4 years ag he has been completely pain free

I got diagnosed about a year ago w sciatica on my right side I wasn’t able suddenly to step up with my right leg, got released same day from the hospital
and treated with painkiller and excsersise which went away. Then a year later got diagnosed with osteopenia in my lower back…Dr do excersise and supplements, but now I have severe pain on my left hip and down my butt.
I wonder if a shot will help for a while? I don’t want to take too many pain killer pills…

If you get the correct exercises from a good physical therapist it did not make my sciatica worse. I had a slight twinge of pain once and I did the exercises for a week and the pain was gone. It has been 10 years since my first experience with PT. Good wishes.

I have suffered from sciatica for 25 years. It's basically due to pinched nerves. It varies significantly with individual circumstances and anatomy; but if your discs are in good shape, you have choices for treatment. PT doesn't treat the underlying issue--nerve compression. I just had my third surgery; first, laminectomy; then one level fusion, now a cleanout of two levels. See how this one goes--was on a thinner, what a mistake to begin taking after surgery. In the end, surgery, if you can find a skilled surgeon, treats the cause. Each person knows when they need to go in tht direction--there is no easy answer. But when you get there--you'll know it.

It does sound like sciatica. Sciatica pain is miserable. I use Voltaren gel, Flexeril 5 mg (a prescribed muscle relaxant) and a heat pack for mine when it flares up. I can't tolerate oral NSAIDS (Advil, Motrin, etc.) which is what is usually prescribed. Mention Sciatica to the doctor and get his take on it. Praying for her.

I have a broken back and then about a month later, I fell and hit another part of my back on a shelf, I believe it may be broken or badly injured. I don't get any thing for muscles or pain, except I do get Light of cane patches which do help if you use them all the time and light of cane cream also helps a lot.I am waiting to see a doctor to see about getting a back brace hope this helps in some way

I also have trouble with ziatica on my left hip. It's not there all the time, but when I set a certain way when I start to get up, but here's so bad. Then I can't walk for sometimes 15 minutes or so.I read the hip and it seems to help them.Good luck
