Mattress recommendations
Hi! This is a very broad, open-ended question, but I'm hoping you might be able to help. I'm going to start looking for a new mattress for my bed because it does a horrible job at supporting my sacrum tailbone and low back. I get severe pain in those areas and having a bed where I feel like I'm constantly sinking in is not helping. I obviously want a mattress that is firmer and more supportive, but I have no idea what to try, and what to look for, and what to avoid. Is there a particular brand that really works for you, and what materials work best for pain. I currently have a twin bed, and my mattress is probably 15 years old, memory foam with gel, with the mattress topper made from those same materials.
Thanks for your suggestions! Amanda

1 Reaction@artemis1886 what mattress are you talking about? I’m fairly certain that your head and legs are not adjustable.
@jdgrambo1 never mind. I was in a teaser area that didn’t share the whole post.
I have just been through this. I went to Mattress Firm and an extremely good sales associate was very helpful. I was getting ready for hip surgery and couldn’t get on my old mattress because it was too high. Plus, it didn’t support my lower back, so it was impossible to sleep. I picked a new mattress and it was delivered. It, too, was too high. I guess the platform it was on at the store was lower than my own, AND it was too short, even though I had measured the length of my old one. Apparently, the way I measured was different than the way the manufacturer does. Aagh. Anyway, I talked to my sales guy and he found a 12 inch mattress for me and had it delivered. Well, I could get on it, but it was as hard as a rock. Meanwhile, I had my hip replaced and realized that the hard mattress had to go back. This time I had to pay a $150 pick up and delivery charge, but was able to exchange the mattress. My caregiver brought me in to the store and I tried mattresses again ( I do know that this is getting old) and ended up with a Sterns and Foster Elite. It is incredibly comfortable and supportive, and my new hip allows me to hop on. So all is well, and I hope there are some lessons for you in my crazy tale!

@bettes oh my goodness! That sounds quite the ordeal! I could totally see something like that happening to me. I'm not getting hip surgery, but my body is extremely picky and what might feel good for a day or two might kill me a week later. Mattress firm is definitely on my list of places to visit.
I find it very dfficult to choose the "right" mattress, which is why I postpone the purchase for too long. For me, laying on a mattress in a showroom only rules out the MUCH-too-hard or MUCH-too-soft. For decades I bought affordable (but recommended) mattresses-in-a-box, which I replaced every several years. Then, my needs became more complex. Shoulders want SOFT, lumbar wants FIRM. Hips (both replaced) want COMFY. After doing a LOT of online research, I visited the Saatva store, which offers a full year trial period and "white glove" service. Five months ago I bought a queen-size "plush" zoned mattress for a bit less than $2K (which, frankly, was above my price point). The middle third of the mattress is firmer, while the top and bottom thirds are softer. Still in the trial period, no complaints.

2 ReactionsI am really impressed with their policy about returning a mattress within a 3 month period if it doesn’t work out for you. Because how are you to know? I hope you have as good an experience as I did! Bette

1 ReactionHi Amanda,
Please, please get a new bed asap!
We've been using Tempur-Pedic for years, always firm. It does adjust to the contours of your body's shape. Personally, I can only sleep on a firm mattress, without any spring coils. That said, it's not good if you can only sleep on one side. I had my shoulder replaced and after sleeping on my back for two weeks (ugh), My right hip gets sore from sleeping on it all night. So it's fine when I can sleep on both sides.
The only other bed that looks very interesting is Sleep Number, where you can adjust the firmness and temperature, on each side of some beds. If I didn't already own a Tempur-Pedic, I'd take a serious look at Sleep Number.
Please let us know what you do!
Joe
Good point, on Tempur-Pedic or any mattress - get one where the back can be raised as well as the bottom. Costly, but worth it.
