Anyone else with Altered Taste All Day Long?

Posted by neisie13 @neisie13, Sep 5 11:13am

For the past several months I have had a problem with a terrible taste all day. I can taste food but as soon as I stop eating it goes back to either a sour or very unpleasant taste or an overwhelming salty taste. The dentist sees no issues, the medications and other products to increase saliva have done nothing, the GERD medication does nothing to help either so now I am on Gabapentin in case it's more of a neurological issue. This has helped reduce the amount of days when I have an overwhelming salty taste but has done nothing to reduce the constant sour and more tolerable salty tastes that I continue to experience all day long. Gum helps mask the taste but the only thing that really helps it is wearing my old orthodontic retainer. I have no idea why this helps but it immediately reduces the miserable taste, Of course this does not resolve the underlying issue. Is there anyone else experiencing this and have you found an answer????

I always wondered about the graft. Mine was cadaver. It was about 4 months after my graft. I haven’t read of it causing it with anyone else though.

I've decided to have my implant removed. It's driving me crazy and I need to rule it out. The Dentist isn't going to be happy. I don't want money back, but I know how Dentist's stand by their work. But, I can't go on like this and at least I can rule it out.

It’s a personal decision for sure, but have you considered if there’s any previous cases ever reported of it being the cause?

I can imagine that this is a big decision. Is there another dentist that could give you a second opinion on why the implant is so uncomfortable? I have never had one so I really have no idea how you are feeling but I'm so sorry that it is driving you crazy!!!

I just got a referral to see a Prosthodontic Specialist because the Oral Surgeon is saying the crown on my implant is too large. $$$ I made the appointment, but I can only imagine what this is going to cost.

Wow you must be so frustrated!!! How long do you have to wait to get an appointment for the TMJ?

I'm not going to USC. The Dentist who put the implant in wants me to come back and he's promising to figure it out.

I guess I thought an implant was an entire fake tooth that has a screw base into the gum when zero tooth is left. And a crown is a cover that covers the nub of tooth that is drilled down to a nub to remove decay or infection, but the base of the tooth remains. And crown fits on the top.
