Anyone else with Altered Taste All Day Long?

Posted by neisie13 @neisie13, Sep 5 11:13am

For the past several months I have had a problem with a terrible taste all day. I can taste food but as soon as I stop eating it goes back to either a sour or very unpleasant taste or an overwhelming salty taste. The dentist sees no issues, the medications and other products to increase saliva have done nothing, the GERD medication does nothing to help either so now I am on Gabapentin in case it's more of a neurological issue. This has helped reduce the amount of days when I have an overwhelming salty taste but has done nothing to reduce the constant sour and more tolerable salty tastes that I continue to experience all day long. Gum helps mask the taste but the only thing that really helps it is wearing my old orthodontic retainer. I have no idea why this helps but it immediately reduces the miserable taste, Of course this does not resolve the underlying issue. Is there anyone else experiencing this and have you found an answer????

Okay now I finally have time to answer. It's been a busy day today with just odds and ends and crazy to say but now I have to put in my retainer before I do errands otherwise I am so miserable...Luckily one of my retainers is clear so no one can really tell I have it in but it still affects my speech a little so I only wear it when I don't have to talk to anyone I know or I am not in a social situation, which these days are few and far between anyway. Your last sentence was about burning mouth and I don't have that either. I have read about it but those are just not my symptoms. I have the altered taste part of it but not the painful tongue or any pain. Sounds like my issue is more functional now that you've explained what that means. I have the symptoms or altered taste, but no one reason for it. Dry mouth seems to be the big reason given over and over but nothing used to treat dry mouth helps me at all so I really don't think that's it and neither do my doctors at this point. Glad again that you have found help with talk therapy and can use it when you need to and so glad you are feeling so much better. I have tinnitus in both ears so years ago I was put on a low dose of Xanax but as much as I'd like to increase it a lot because of all this anxiety now over this taste issue, I know it is very addictive so I won't go up in dose and no one has recommended that anyway. I was put on several SSRI's a few years ago for anxiety, etc. but they made my ringing 10 times worse which upped my anxiety so that was a waste. I may try the Cymbalta generic again though since it is supposed to help nerve damage and it is not a true SSRI...and is better for your brain than Gabapentin which is supposed to cause Alzeheimers and I don't want that!!! I am not taking a super high dose but still it's not worth it if I can find something better. The gaba is not helping the taste issue anyway though it is a wonder against my daily morning headaches. I would like to find out why since it might at least explain what caused the headaches that I had every singe morning at 5 a.m. I'm just so disappointed that it's not helping the taste since the rheumatologist really thought it would..Did all those conditions that you were tested for like Parkinsons, all happen after you got Covid?? Just wondering since so many people have had terrible after effects after having Covid besides the smell/taste problems! Thanks again for providing so much information and again so glad you are feeling better....

I was put on Xanax and please don't get addicted to that. I am 66 trying to wean off of it and it's very hard. I am focused though. But, it's like the older we get so many health issues!! The burning tongue is off and on and I did go through a period where I wasn't making saliva. It was HORRIBLE. We can only drink so much water and if I didnt have a mint in my mouth or gum or was eating I was sooo Miserable. I also have ringing in both ears and attribute it to Xanax. It served its purpose when they gave it to me. But, at the time I knew nothing about it and had no idea I could get addicted to it. I'm being careful now just weaning a half every two weeks. I want to be off by Dec..
I will let you know tomorrow what the Oral Surgeon says. The doctor who put the implant in is 3 hours away and is going to have a fit if they say they want to remove it. I'm going to try to see if they can talk on the phone together if that is the case. lol What a Mess!!!!

Thank you for your concern. I was put on Xanax to help with the anxiety from having tinnitus but it is I know that for some people it causes tinnitus. I had it before I started the medication and am on a pretty low dose but with everything going on I don't want to try to get off of it until things with my mouth calm down if that is even possible. I do make saliva but I am miserable too when I am not eating with the horrible tastes. Like you I keep drinking water thinking that I must be dehydrated but that doesn't help so I chew gum, pop a mint, brush my teeth or use a non-alcoholic mouthwash. It is a real nightmare. Yes, it sounds like you have a lot to coordinate between the two dentists so hopefully it will all work out!!! Wishing you good luck again!!

Okay, went to the Oral Surgeon and he found Nothing. The dentist came in and immediately said I can tell your front teeth have moved and I told her they had. Also, I feel like my back left teeth are all bunched together. So, tomorrow at 9 a.m., we are going to see the Orthodontist. Dentist said we need to get the back upper teeth moved back and my whole bite is off on the left side. Hopefully, this works. I'll keep you all updated. Thank you for all the responses.

Well, at least you had the consult and don't have anything wrong with your upper teeth that needs surgery. Hopefully you will feel better once your teeth get back in alignment. Did you discuss your taste issues? Thanks for letting us know how the visit went.

Months!!! I am just really ready to freak out. I'm looking for an alternative Orthodontic Dentist, but now they are all saying, "Well, you have that implant and it doesn't move." Honestly, I wish they would have just taken it out. But the Oral Surgeon said it looked fine and it is hard to get them out, plus I paid 11,000 to have it put it in!!!!!!

I have family members who work in dental field and they are wonderful, but I will say that a lot of dental places will really run up a large bill. It pays toget a second opinion.

I’ve spent a lot on cosmetic dentistry. Most of it years ago, so not related to taste issue. With my gum line surgery and porcelain veneers over $14,000.

Did anyone have a dental bone graft prior to implant?

I did have a dental bone graft prior to implant. I was fine with that. I was fine until a few weeks after the implant.

I always wondered about the graft. Mine was cadaver. It was about 4 months after my graft. I haven’t read of it causing it with anyone else though.
