I was unsure too. I ended up making an appointment with an oral surgeon because I figured I needed someone who knew both body medicine and dental medicine. I wasn’t even referred there, I had to navigate this by my own intuition. He told me my issues could surely stem from leaking, infected root canals, possibly from cracks in the root. To make myself feel more secure about his theory, I saw a second oral surgeon who told me he’s seen people with symptoms like mine. I was astonished, since the medical world had told me that not only was I perfectly healthy, but that they’d never seen anyone complain about the issues I was having. I felt like I came to a new planet and no one could understand what I was saying when I sought a diagnosis from the MD world.

And the most knowledgeable of all has been my prosthodontist, who has been practicing for many years, and is the leader of the professional dental society in my area. He has explained my issues with such clarity. It took me over 4 years to find answers, and many times I didn’t think I would — especially after 2 Mayo docs said “sadly, sometimes people don’t find answers, it’s just the nature of medicine”. So frustrating.

A good oral surgeon will do a cone beam CT scan, which would be able to show if your tooth root protrudes into your sinus, or if you have infection with bone loss.

Good luck!

I was told by the endontist that i have bone loss therefore he referred me to the ent to fix the sinus, so he could do an implant if needed. The ct scan at Mayo sees a problem and calls it periodontitis. I guess I may not need anything because the endontist said it’s an Ent issue and 2 ent’s have said it’s a tooth issue. But it may have been a different tooth which is adjacent and recently cracked and got a crown. I don’t have any pain at this time. The Mayo ent gave a good look and report which pointed to the tooth I just got a crown on. Not the tooth with the root canal. So maybe it was all a mistaken tooth identified at the beginning for an infection that was cleared with antibiotics and later finally got fixed with a crown. I will go back and talk to my dentist. Thanks everyone for sharing it’s been very helpful.
