Type 2 diabetes & questions about how to better manage diet

Started with Metformin and had intense diarrhea and lost a lot of weight. Dr changed me to Januvia and it seems to be easier on my body and AC has come down to almost normal. Any suggestions how to better manage diet?

I had the same reaction to Metformin. Congratulations on your A1C being near normal!
I manage diet mostly with portion control. I don't restrict or deny myself my favorite foods, but I eat less of everything. I only drink water and coffee as well. No pop/soda or juice generally.

You make me feel better as I am eating less but not missing out completely on things I really like. I am still having Diet Coke but I have really cut back. Water, iced tea and coffee. No juice except grapefruit once in a great while. Wine 2 or 3 times a month playing bridge. Metformin would have killed me if I had continued to use it, bad stuff. Thanks for sharing

I stopped metformin and statin. Now i am taking red yeast rice supplement and co q10 gummy chews instead. I read that lovastsin comes from red yeast rice. So trying to take because statin caused leg cramps. Interesting that metformin can help lose weight. I stopped taking because got a1c under 7 with diet and exercise. Might try again if helps to lose weight.

I have reversed my diabetes. No medication. A1C was 8.5 now 5.4. I follow the Wheat Belly way of eating. No sugar no grains. I feel great again.

@kbart I had never heard of this eating plan prior to your post. How long did you follow this eating plan before noticing a change in your blood sugar numbers?

Wheat Belly was created by Dr, Davis. He has several books out but I learned mostly from his Facebook page. It only took a few weeks and I had no cravings and numbers are under 100. It is easier than counting carbs for me and I did not like the way I felt on meds.

When they informed me I had Type 2 Diabetes, I decided to go cold turkey on sweets, and soda. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with diet Coke, but I followed the doctor's instructions. It was sort of hard at first, but now I don't miss it. I gave up chocolate years ago, after my heart attack. I was really hooked on on that, big time. When I found out about Type 2, I gave up all candy. Licorice had been my crutch for years. Today, when I look at a bag of licorice, or smell a chocolate bar, I still want it, but fight the desire. Good luck on your change. Whether you do it slowly, or all at once, do it. It's worth it.

Hi anyone, I am new to this site and hope I'm all in. I am type ll and control it w/ diet and exercise and must be doing o.k.as I am conscious about keeping my A1C low and controlled and lot lbs. two years ago. I seldom go low but do treat accordingly. I feel the symptoms usually while at the gym. Q- does anyone have ideas for home made salad dressings and variety infused water?
