Obese, diabetic with high BP; need help with food addiction

Diagnosed 1 year ago. Can't take Metformin or Glipizide due to side effects. Felt like a zombie, could hardly do my work. Didn't make much difference in my levels as I am also a food addict. Weight at 312 (was 320 2 1/2 weeks ago). A1C at 10.2 and sugar was 345 on Saturday morning. Feel better off the Meds, actually walking and getting to the gym. I know a lot of this will get better if I lose the weight.
Anyone out there a food addict like myself? How are you coping?
Also would like to know if there are any vitamins that help with the high blood pressure or the diabetes since the meds only make it worse for me.

I definitely know about food addiction. I am 68, and over the years, I have lost more weight than I weigh right now. I put on weight after my first child, and more with my second. My family called me fat my whole life, but looking back at pictures, I never was a bit overweight. I did put on weight my senior year of high school, mom took me to her Dr, who was really obese, he gave me a diet to follow, and diet pills. I lost the weight, then met my husband. My first real weight loss was when Weight Watchers came to our area. I lost over 100#, then my husband, who was in the Air Force, got transferred, and I lost my support system, of the weekly meetings. The next time I joined Overeaters Anonymous, when they first got started, and lost the same over 100#. Then the group lost the meeting place, so I lost my support system again, and gained the weight back, again. Then, I started hearing about bariatric bypass, and had that done 7 years ago. I lost 60 pounds, then quit losing. I maintained that 210# for about 4 years, then was put on meds for nerve damage pain, and started to put it back on again. I'm at 235# now, and not happy about it. The doctors thought I would be a good candidate for the surgery, since I had managed to lose the weight twice, but they didn't realize that the reason I was able to do it was the weekly meetings, and I thought they would have more support than the once a month support group they provided.
If it was possible to undo the bypass surgery, I would. Actually, I wish I hadn't had it in the first place, because now my body doesn't absorb nutrients, so I have to take loads of vitamins, and am supposed to eat lots of protein, etc. I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place. I went to an Overeaters Anonymous meeting a couple of times, but it has changed so much, it didn't help me any more.
So, I have pretty much given up. I try to eat the things that will help me lose the weight, but my husband expects me to cook him the foods he likes for dinner, when I would rather just have a salad, etc, but I don't know how to cook meals he likes, and not eat what he eats, like casseroles, hamburger helpers, etc, We end up with more leftovers than I can use as it is.
So now I pray and do the best I can. I know God doesn't want me to keep hating myself over this, so I take it a day at a time.

Hi my husband does expect me to cook supper for him. That's a big reason I came home from camping. I needed to cook. I do encourage people to have a wellness plan. Maybe you can get a coach that you can talk to. I talk to mine on coach chat. That's on healthy living portal. Actually you have to write on coach chat because mayo want these communications to be official. They are part of medical record. Also the portal sends me messages in morning and evening and asks me questions. In morning it's says good morning, how is your energy level today? In evening it asks how my day went. I think they're doing research so they're gathering data.

@ihatediabetes, I am so happy that you're camping. I'm impressed that you are sleeping in a tent, which is more than I'm willing to do. I'm very disappointed that my husband canceled our 5 week camping trip when I had my most recent acute back pain. He did save the last week of the trip since it is in Yosemite, which is close to us. Also, his baby son's (who died from viral meningitis 6 years before our marriage) ashes are there. I love Yosemite and I love camping. We have a 5th wheel camper, so I don't have to help setup a tent and sleep on the ground. That makes it even more enjoyable for both of us. We will plan another camping trip later this year. Congratulations on your achievement!

I must be married to a Renaissance man because he has never expected me to fulfill the traditional wife role. He's 72 years old, a Vietnam veteran, and Hispanic, so you would think he would be old fashioned. But for whatever reason, he has never been. I remember my first indication when shortly after we we were living together he took out the ironing board and started to iron his shirt. I was embarrassed and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know you were out of shirts. I'll iron those for you." He turned around and looked me in the eye and said, "I don't iron your clothes for you, why should you iron mine? I learned how to take care of myself in the Air Force. I don't want you to be my maid, I want you to be my love, my friend, and my life companion." I sat there in shock at my good luck of finding the right man for my life. He has his faults, but they are ones I have lived with for 34 years, and can accept.

My Mom made triple recipes on Sat. then we had “leftovers” all week long. So many foods taste better the next day anyway. And lots of meals can be frozen of course. <br>Mari<br><br>

I try to do that when I can, but my husband isn't crazy about leftovers. He is getting better about it since we both retired and we have to stretch our budget. I want to learn more recipes that I can do that with, I'm not a real good cook, and hope to learn more things that I can make enough to freeze, to vary our meals. I have a very hard time coming up with ideas for meals, and I've asked him to help me with it, but he isn't much help.

I spent about $300 on the tent, sleeping bag, and pad. I'm trying to keep the expenses down. I don't know how I would tow something like 5th wheel. Sounds like a pickup truck is needed. I'm actually trying to figure out how to make due with less. If I can lose enough weight then maybe I don't need cpap machine. That's what doctors told me. Then I could camp without electricity hookup. One of my goals is to be able to carry everything into to a remote camp site. I'd have to keep the weight of load down. My tent weighs probably 7 pounds. I need to carry food, water, sleeping bag, etc. So I'm thinking about how I can do this. Maybe start in state park and reserve walk in site. That would probably be just a half mile away from vehicle. One day I'd like to thru hike for several days and get a ride back. It's an ongoing process. I can't thru hike at present. But for me the whole point is developing outside activities and a mind and body that is capable of doing these activities. I was watching people hike and run through the park on Sunday morning. I saw some senior citizens hiking with trekking poles. It seemed like they used the trekking poles for stability. I was totally in awe of them. I'm thinking of getting trekking poles too. My family doctor recommended them to me. It takes stress off your legs, back, and hips when you use arms too. It's probably better for cardio vascular fitness. It looks kind of like cross country skiing, but with hiking boots instead of skiis.

@ihatediabetes I have not used the trekking poles but I've seen them being used and they do look like a great help. Folks who have Parkinson's use them for stability and balance so it would probably be good for anyone starting a fitness program. If you try them, please let us know how they work for you and if you feel more comfortable with them. Teresa

I use trekking poles and love them. Frankly I had to get a pair because I couldn't keep up with my mom. She's so fast when she uses them. I like that they make me stand up taller when I walk. It really helps to counter-balance the computer slouch.

I bought a hiking pole from camp store but it's just one pole. It looks bigger and heavier than the trekking poles I saw. The people using them were moving their hands really quickly. And there was a clicking noise coming from the poles. Btw I signed up for living with chronic conditions class. It's through Well Connect of South East Minnesota. I think it's a good resource for people living with any chronic condition. The class is free but the book is $20. There is a lot of overlap between healthy living program and living with chronic conditions class. It talks about nutrition, physical activity, and managing emotions. So that might be useful resource for many.
