transcranial magnetic stimulation

Has anybody had experience with TMS? And what is opinion of it?

I had TMS a few years ago. It didn't really help me, but I think there might have been some potential if I kept it up. At the time, insurance did not pay for it, but I think perhaps now it does. If you can do it, I would probably give it a try. You have nothing to lose, and it's all painless and somewhat relaxing.

Hi @johnt, and welcome to Connect. I'm so happy that @callalily74 was able to offer her insight. I'd like to also introduce you to @tstro and @daisydextermom - two other members who have also discussed TMS. I'd encourage you to also read some information on TMS from Mayo Clinic: http://mayocl.in/1QmRxP3.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself, @johnt? Have you and your doctor been having discussions on TMS?

I was going to have it but my insurance wouldn't pay for the treatment.

My son has been depressed for many years. (he is 35 yrs) Antidepressants have not worked for him. ECT helped for awhile but he is concerned about doing it too many times. He has had several severe concussions. We think this is the cause of his depression but the doctors just want to medicate. What can we do? Is TMS a possibility for this time of depression?

Hi, @indigo. Wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

I thought it might be helpful to merge the new thread you started with the thread started by fellow Connect member @johnt, in hopes that he and other members in the discussion might have some experiences and conclusions to share about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

You may also be interested in reading this discussion thread https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/need-help-2e8c44/bookmark/?ajax_hook=action&_wpnonce=3df217e6a2, where you’ll meet @safetyshield @lesbatts @IndianaScott @jimhd @cowboy1997 and others discussing depression and anxiety. @cowboy1997 talked specifically about TMS.

I hope they’ll be able to shed some light on your question.

How has your experience with TMS gone so far?

@toshkana I had rTMS recently when I was hospitalized. After few sessions I think I felt better, more alive. It was just recently, so I will see what long-term effect wil be.
