Just started insulin injections, but they don't seem to work

Posted by rlmac27 @rlmac27, Jul 11, 2016

After 18 units in a single day with basically no food and my levels barely dropped. Next day tried it with food same thing barley dropped. Cant get below the 300 mark...Any suggestions? This is my first time with insulin injections

Hi @rlmac27 and @ujeenjack - welcome to Connect! I'm tagging @johnwburns, @tomgrinley and @saucy, as these members have discussed their experience with managing diabetes. I also encourage you to check out some information on diabetes management from Mayo Clinic: http://mayocl.in/1ieibM2.

@rlmac27, have you consulted with your physician regarding this? He/she may have additional tips to help you manage your levels. Can you also share with the group the types of food you're eating? Your diet is very critical to effectively managing diabetes and a few members may be able to provide some insight around that.

My doctor was shocked when she saw my A1C drop from 6.1 to 5.7 in 3 months! I was on a low carb diet but after reading about fructose malabsorbation I cut out fruit and high fiber protein bars. I eat mostly proteins and low starch vegetables. All the foods I have been told to cut out for acid reflux like coffee and wine ect, really had no effect. I was always told to eat fruit and grains, turns out that was what was causing the reflux and rise in blood sugars. My doctor admitted that most doctors don't have time to deal with nutrition. I suggest reading the book, it has changed my life. I no longer get foot and leg cramps or retain water weight, I sleep better and people tell me I look well rested!! This effects 30 percent of the population.

I had "pre-diabetes" for a while so my PCP was monitoring me closely. When I crossed over into diabetes she prescribed Metformin ER in the AM and regular Metformin at bedtime. That has, so far, managed my diabetes well and I have not had to consider insulin.

The injector has Humalog Kwiki Pen
Insulin Lispro. As you can see I am very new to this. I just started last week with the injections along with taking Metformin ER. I was talking with a couple of co-workers who are type 1's and they told me it took a few different types of insulin before they found one that worked for them. Just feel terrible and looking for answers.

U DID NOT SAY WHETHER U R TYPE 1 OR 2.

U SHOULD BE TALKING TO YOUR DIABETES SPECIALIST, NOT DOING THESE POSTS!

I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT TYPE OF INSULIN. a READING OF 300 IS HIGH!

U SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKING YOUR Hb1AC every 2-3 mos. and your KIDNEY FUNCTION! YOUR CREATININE IS THE INDICATOR TO LOOK AT TOO.

JUST CHECKED THE MAYO CLINIC FOR LISPRO: IT IS A FAST,SHORT ACTING FORM OF INSULIN AND IOT'S USE NEEDS TO BE MONITORED.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER FORM, MAYBE HUMALOG 50/50. WITH OR WITHOUT LISDPRO.

BEFORE I USED HUMALOG. BEFORE/JUST AFTER BREAKFAST AND SUPPER, I USED A DIFFERENT FORM WITH ALL 3
MEALS AND ALSO SOME LONG ACTING FORM. USING HUMALOG 50/50 WITH ONLY TWO MEALS WAS THE ALTERNATIVE UNTIL NOW. I NOW ADD ABOUT HALF OF MY REGULAR DOSE WITH LUNCH TO REDUCE THE BIG JUMP IN GLUCOSE
BETWEEN LUNCH AND SUPPER. I ALSO TAKE SOME HUMALOG WITH A SNACK, SAY BEFORE BEDTIME.
