Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and blood

Posted by needtoknow @needtoknow, Feb 10, 2016

Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and tiny amounts of blood. It seems to come from the back of my throat or nose. My doctor has seen the scab but does not see anything wrong. This, to me, seems really odd. Has anyone had this problem?

@glassshark

I have the same exact mucous “scab” problem too. It slides down and sticks to the back of my throat from my nose every day/every couple days. This has been happening for around 2+ years. It worsened after my turbinate reduction surgery. I have also previously had surgery to correct deviated septum. My ENT doctor has scoped my nose several times since my turbinate reduction surgery. He’s confirmed that the crust/mucous is forming on my adenoids. He doesn’t think it’s infected though, as the tissue underneath the mucuos doesn’t look particularly inflamed.

However, he did have me apply mupirocin ointment to the inside of my nostrils (3 times a day for 7 days to get rid of potential staph)... and the mucuos and scabbing went away temporarily... Over the past 2 years, I’ve done the course of mupirocin ointment three times. Each time, by the end of the 7 days, the mucuos eases up and I have no scabbing. This lasts for a week or two (and it’s glorious!)... but then it comes back. The same thing happened when I took antibiotics (Keflex) for a UTI— it went away during the antibiotic treatment then came back a week or two later.

Still, after all of that, my doctor does not think my adenoids are infected. I believe him, because he’s a nose expert, after all. Last thing he told me is that he doesn’t think it’s anything scary, but for him to try to better understand what it is (he’s never seen this problem before), he would have to remove the adenoids and biopsy them. It’s something I’m considering but, dang it, I don’t really want to have another surgery! I also get tonsil stones, so was thinking I could get those out at the same time if I decide to go through with it.

Also... what’s weird is that both of my brothers experience the same thing too. Such a mystery.

@beebuzz If you don’t mind explaining more, what exactly did your doctor say about the mono?

Stay strong, nose buddies.

Ok fellow nose buddies! Are any of yours followed by any other symptoms like low grade fever. Swollen lymphs. Headache. Feeling itchy in your nose eye or eye brow area. Dry eyes. Feeling of pressure in head. ? I've been to countless doctors and noone seems to know why. I've done my own homework and my really good friend and BF have the same symptoms along with sore like crustations and lesions on skin. Honestly the lesions look like a dried up nose/throat booger as proir poster posted. Do any of you have dogs? And are you in close living quarters with them if so? I've heard it all from metal health issues and I was crazy right down to must be drugs (meth bugs) involved. Yes I have used drugs in past but I am currently not using and this has nothing to do w a lesions on the skin. These symptoms all have gone on and lasted for 2 years and my friend for 4 years. They are telling her it's a fungal infection but we both are convinced it's something zootonic and parasitic involving the dogs. I have found articles on cryptosporidium, toxoplasmosis, and Guardia. Now if I was to spit or blow these boogers out eventually it would leave behind a black fiber string looking thing. Sounds strange and made up but it's the gods honest truth. At one point my girls bath water turned blue please some one help us all. 3 of us with the same issues and nothing in common besides our dogs are in close close living quarters and could this be the culprit? Looking for answers. Anyone wanna reach out to me, please PM me on Connect. I'm happy to connect with anyone going through this same F****** S***. LOTS OF LOVE AND PRAYERS FELLOW BOOGERS

I have a bloody mucus scab that drops down into my mouth every other day. Also chronic infections making my throat sore . I have been on antibiotics many times but it never goes away completely. Tomorrow I am having a biopsy of my nasopharynx under general anesthesia. I will try to find this thread when I know the diagnosis. I have no fever. I do think I have a little hearing loss in one ear and swollen lymph nodes on both sides of neck. They are not tender or painful.

My dermatologist suggested washing my face with danderouf shampoo. Give it a try.

Hi, @jeanette527 - did your dermatologist explain more about why the dandruff shampoo face wash?

@theysayimcrazy - wondering if you've run the group of symptoms you are experiencing by your dog's veterinarian to check out the theory of a zoonotic angle? If so, what did he or she say?

Yes, even though I don't have danderuf on my scalp my face was a little flaky and dry.. She had a name for it that was similar to a scalp condition. I would get itchy in my brows and above them along with the itchy nose like you mentioned. My eyelids get itchy, too. The shampoo makes my skin really dry so I use a drop or two of baby oil gel on my face.

I'm thinking it's a fungal infection and I'm a Crohn's disease positive patient and I read about the fungal deep pyroderma. That's it. I see it on her skin floods

I thought I would share as I also suffer from what appear to be the same symptoms as indicated by many, and have yet to find a resolution via a Doctor.

- I've had the primary symptom where I occasionally catch in my throat and can cough up a mucus-y, but firm booger/scab every couple to few days
- I've seen an ENT twice, each time been prescribed an antibiotic but there has been no permanent solution (I can't remember the antibiotic names)
- I've been scoped and it was said that she saw 'dry crustiness' but no confirmation of an issue or condition
- I believe something was sent to the lab, but I never received a confirmation upon those results
- I was asked to nasal rinse daily, of which I attempted to do my best, but it honestly was never a solution either (and daily boiling or carting around distilled water in NYC is honestly a lot)
- I nasal rinsed daily to start, with mupirocin diluted in to the water, but after a month or so swapped to more like every other day, then it trickles down from there
- Honestly, even daily didn't affect the symptoms much

Some unique or personal notes:

- I live in an extremely dry NYC apartment, and DO frequently believe that I breath through my mouth during sleep, but I can find no solution for that
- I run a humidifier (and clean it) but have found no affect on symptoms
- I can actually, with my tongue, reach back and up, into the beginnings of the nasal passage, feel the dryness and beginnings of deposits and occasionally dislodge
- I otherwise do not cough, feel ill, or suffer from any other symptom
- I'm 34, male, healthy weight, don't suffer from acid reflux to my knowledge, and don't smoke or drink alcohol

Because I think the photos are helpful for others, I've been saving pictures of the result of discharge for a month and I'm sharing for those that are also suffering -- these occurred every 2-4 days or so, for a month.

The ENT I'd visited seemed fine, but I'm also not interested in guessing at antibiotics once every year or so only to see no change, and the presence of occasional blood (as you can see) is troubling. I really did think it might have to do with sleeping and dryness, but the comments in the thread have been interesting to also see.

Everything you explained and even your pictures are spot on with the issues I’m having. I have always thought it was staph. I wonder if we could pass this info along to Reddit? They are very good at identifying health problems. Anyone familiar with Reddit?
