Visited a physical medicine doctor about a severe physical imbalance and loss of use of arms
I have visited with a physical medicine doctor about a severe physical imbalance and loss of use of arms. I was sent to physical therapy where they had no instructions on what to do with me. they did not evaluate me before starting exercises. the exercises I did had no plan or target for improvement. the exercises started making my arms numb up to my shoulders and complaints were ignored. I finished the 8 weeks and was let go after they noted my goals were not met and there was no follow up visit from the doctor.
I scheduled a follow up with the doctor and was asked why. he had read the therapy reports stating i did not improve, i got worse. I showed him with a model where the muscles were binding in my shoulders. I showed him the body position that caused the original injury but he shrugged his shoulders. I wanted him to hear the crunching that my body made and asked them to use stethescope. he said he didn't have one. i waited five seconds before raising my voice and saying "maybe we should call someone", then I went to the check in counter and borrowed one for him myself.
then the documentation says nothing of my pointing out on the shoulder model or the complaints from the therapy. and then the doctor says there is nothing they can do for me yet sends me off to other doctors like a medical whack a mole.
I been going through this for 15 years while the problem gets progressively worse. it is ending my life and i told the dr this exactly but keep getting treating like crap. I came to mayo because i wanted scientists and what was promised in the commercial that has fireflies and says you end up with a team of doctors at mayo. instead i have a dr that doesn't want my case and is sending me around randomly while my quality of life evaporates.
what is the right thing to do? I have a follow up again in 20 days.

If you don't mind I would like to offer alittle advice. 17 years ago I was in a terrible car accident. I saw 13 specialist locally and no one could figure out how to fix my sternal fracture and 100's of bones shattered in my chest. Was referred to Mayo's. I to saw many MD's this is called the collaborated approach. Most of the times 3 heads are better than 1 in difficult cases. I to left very disappointed. I was told "stenal fractures Always heal".. I soon forced myself to become very educated on the body and its complex system. Long story short. I finally found 2 surgeons who would attempt to fixed it, it wrked!!! I send my surgical notes to my Mayo docs and they were very thankful!! They are not god. They can not fix everything. But they are very good. I have been back a couple of times and heading back in a week for unrelated issues. Technology forever changing. They learn from every case every patient. So I suggest you go to your appt and ask for a second opinion. Good Luck!!

At my last appointment the Dr. explained to me that my condition is taboo and that care providers do anything they can to keep from using that diagnosis because of its complexity and history of lawsuits. They go out of their way to get rid of me.<br />
I completed my prerequisite appointments for the Physiatrist follow-up and after 7 days they have not responded to my request for this appointment.<br />

Now I understand clearly. They ignore my true complaint and create a snow storm of symptoms from distant past that I am not complaining about so they can construct a context that fits their agenda. This becomes my Mayo medical record. <br />

Then that Dr. sends me off to a totally unrelated Dr. who has only that crap snow job for information. Then they start the appointment totally out of the context for which I came to them. I try to guide them from their "scope creep" but they, like ticks, dig deeper into their agenda so far their heads can't hear me.<br />
Bottom line, 6 months after starting with Mayo I went to three outside providers who instantly recognized the symptoms and acted positively. I'm finally getting the therapy I was looking for.<br />
The neatest thing about Mayo is that many of the structural problems discovered by the area's most trusted radiology groups are being denied here. That's a great way to cure people! Ignore their complaints, deny their bullet-proof medical records and images, create crap records that avoid the patients true complaint, and establish a 6 month "history" that now is causing outside doctors to be afraid to work with me.<br />
Mayo single handedly proves American medical system works only for the system. Their behavior has hurt me badly, past present and future.<br />
So very happy to hear you are getting treatment now. I pray you continue to get your therapy needs met in a positive direction. I own a Home Health Care Agency now and see & here all the stories. Health care is both good and bad everywhere. It's about finding whats right for you. So happy you finally found it. Good Luck & god bless you.
