HELP!! Reoccuring pain behind right breast, under rib cage, pelvic bone - RIGHT SIDE

Posted by SarahJO @sarahjo, Sep 9, 2012

Hi, I'm a 26 year old female...had 3 pregnancies, one miscarriage...
I've had a sharp, stabbing pain behind/in the center of my right breast for a LONG TIME (like, maybe a couple to several years?). There's no lump... It happens just about daily - sometimes several times a day. Sometimes the pain is very sharp & painful, other times it flares up just a bit... Possible it happens most after meals?
The pain just under my right ribcage is also sharp & stabbing, but sometimes also feels like a burning pain - feels like it's just under the skin. Had it for several years, too. Can't feel anything abnormal there either. I asked the doctor about this once, and she just said it was probably a pinched nerve (I was very pregnant at the time), but it had happened before my pregnancy, and it's going on now 6 months after my son's birth.) Possible it happens most after meals?
The pain on the right side of my pelvic bone (okay, I don't know a whole lot about my anatomy down there - it's the top right "corner"/edge of the bone, closest to the hip bone, if that makes any sense) is also a sharp, stabbing pain. This occurs the least frequently, but still often enough (and on the SAME SIDE) that it scares me to death!
Has anyone else ever had this happen before? What did you do? What happened? What was your diagnosis? Thanks so much!
A very frightened, Sarah

Gallbladder already taken out. Seems my right side organ are experiencing inflammation. Severe Gas build up that travels to my shoulder and down part of my arm. More bad days then good. Three years of Gastro and primary doctors stating they can not figure out what was wrong with me. Small cist on liver, small hiatial hernia all they said should not cause this pain.reports say med to severe disc degeneration. So far I have mentioned investigating that and or pancreatitis as those seem to have symptoms i am experiencing. The responses were - no that can not be it, i don't know I am only a primary care physician and the previous specialist was thorough so that is all we can do. Stop burbing, eat gasex (which does not work) and take prilosec. Horrible bloating and stomach distention. I barely make it through work. Seeking advise or recommendation for a physician in new port richey florida area who will consider and investigate other causes. Willing to go to mayo clinic but need to keep my job so i must do as much as possible in short time frames. Help anyone.

Hello @lindac15 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I see that this is your first post and we are glad that you have joined us.

It sounds like you are very uncomfortable now and you are not getting much medical assistance. Many of us have been in that place and know the importance of persisting with the medical community in order to get your questions answered and to get to the root of the problem. It is a terrible feeling not to be well and not to understand the cause, isn't it?

Just a few questions, if you feel comfortable sharing more: Have you lost much weight since this problem developed? Have you ever thought about keeping a journal of food and activity to see if there might be some triggers to your symptoms? This might be helpful.

I would encourage you to seek a second opinion and bring with you a journal of when your symptoms seem to be at their worse.

Will you keep in touch with us and let us know how you are doing?

Teresa

Hello and thank you for getting back to me so quickly. This whole episode started with an uncontrollable weight gain. Gained 35 lbs in two months without changing my eating habits. Normal bad cholesterol all my life went up to 250 I tried various changes in diet. Only ate fruits and tiny bits at a time. Was dehydrating them as well so I could have as a snack. Over the last year I have lost 15 of those lbs. But believe me adding the 35 put me to the overweight category. Went from 140 to 165. I am usually a very active person. Did Pilaties daily and gym few days a week. Now 10 leg lifts on each. Side creates massive gastric build up. Even my fiance says there is really ni rhyme or reason to this today i had a half a can of chicken noodle soup. I was in pain before i ate and it increased after i ate that little bit. Blood tests show low b and d but B is not below 200 so they won't provide b shots and the vitamins trigger a 12 hour heating pad session.

I need help finding a second opinion physician. The ones i have found don't acknowledge the Mayo Clinic findings. I would like to rule out the problems that match my symptoms.

Hello @lindac15

From your last post, it sounds like you have been to Mayo Clinic previously? If so, what were the findings at Mayo?

No I have never been there. I do however know the reputation and have searched the internet for any possible guidance. The Mayo Clinic information was the only place I found who stated there were alternative reasons for what I am experiencing. The first gasto doctor recommended gallbladder removal because he could not seem to find anything else. The surgeon said it was inflamed but thats all. Said he looked around while he was in there and did not see any obvious problems.

Thanks for that clarification, @lindac15

So the information you received from Mayo was from their website. From what I gather the drive to the Mayo facility in Florida must be too long of a distance for you, is that correct? From what I understand some hospital systems have a connection with Mayo doctors and are able to get opinions for their patients. You might call the Mayo facility in Florida and see if any of the hospitals in your vicinity might have that kind of agreement with Mayo.

I'm going to tag @lisalucier to see if she would know more about this.

Yes it is over 3.5 hours to get there and feeling how I do that can be very tough. 7 hour round trip and appointment. Thank you I will try that as well

I understand how difficult that long of a trip can be. I had vocal cord surgery about 3 years ago. I live in SE Michigan, but went to Cleveland Clinic (about the same distance you mentioned). I was glad that I had surgery there, but the follow up appointments were difficult. I finally checked with the Cleveland Clinic doctor and he knew another doctor about 30 minutes from my home that I could follow up with - I was very happy about that!

Yes that is what I hope could happen. But over 3 years of pain makes the trip worth while if that is what has to happen. I wish you the best and hope all is good for you now. Thank you for understanding
