Insomnia and depression

Posted by Iraku @iraku, Jun 21, 2012

I have noticed after the anti-depressant kicks in my insomnia has been slowly increasing. I feel wide awake for some period and then becoming so tired and thought that I could sleep but then when the light is off and I just slowly back to becoming wide awake again. I usually unable to sleep around mid night, the usual hour that I can fall asleep will moving away from 3 am to later and later. No matter how I tried to tired myself out and go to bed at normal hour, it won't happen. Please help!

Hi @pjss48 that must be so frustrating to not get enough sleep. You may have noticed I moved your post to this existing discussion on Insomnia and Depression in hopes that you could read and learn from others who have similar experiences.

I also wanted to introduce you to @peejayo and @lorena1egas as they have had similar experiences.

Back to you @pjss48 how long has this been going on? How much sleep are you getting?

@pjss48 l was reading about your sleep problems. I have them too but l.have sleep apnea have you ever talked to your doctor about that? I had a brain injury then liver disease and autoimmune disease. And then l was told my asthma came back so my husband told my pulmonologist l snore. So l had a sleep study and l use a cpac machine. And l.get a goodnight sleep now sometimes l might not sleep too good but sometimes if l know l have something to do the next day then l can't sleep. But l have been doing that since my brain injury. And l was put on meds but now l Thank God l can't take sleeping pills and antidepressants because of my liver. I just have to retrain my brain the natural way. I think some doctors are finally getting that because it can mess you up. So try some soft music. You can retrain your brain a lot of things. I will be praying for you. I am reading a book about a doctor who talks about our brains and how we can retrain it. She as Christian doctor and has done some extensive work and she talks about how her patients problems and how they have turned there thinking and sleep.habits around. Praying for you to have a good nights rest.

Many of you have talked about a link with depression and anxiety and depression: that your antidepressants increase anxiety, or that anxiety or depression themselves keep you lying awake at night, unable to get the sleep you'd like. Wondered if you'd share how that is going lately? I think many of the members here will benefit from your updates and anything you've found helps along the way.

@tolepma - how is your stress lately? Is it interfering with your sleep?

@lorena1egas - how are things going with the anxiety you were dealing with and your sleep?

@peejayo - you'd said you feel you can hardly sleep when you feel you should, and you also mentioned dealing with anxiety and depression. How is your sleep going recently?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your polite answer. my reumatologist keep tracking my situation every 3 months (I send the blood tests through the patient portal). But a Mayo psychiatrist check me once and he was extreme acertive (neuryl/clonazepam) for rem sleep, and zoloft for my long term condition. No matter what, sometimes there is a need to make adjustments because of external factors or internal (hormone changes) and I can trust a psychiatrist here at my country then they just make prescriptions over prescriptions and thats it I cant trust my mental health to money oriented medical staff. No research, no listening techniques, no patient approach. so my question is if it is possible to have a psychiatric appointment through telemedicine consults? mayo clinic have my clinical history and I still keep my international insurance. About my sleep, it is my big problem, after I did my complete hysterectomy due to premenstrual disforic disorder (also at Mayo) and use excelent estradiol patches, but medication is a must. I also take cbd oil that help with mood and my autoinmune condition (inflamation) and I dont want to stop it. when my sleep suffers I am not a person anymore. Right now I am doing fine thanks to a prescription of clonazepam, but I wont return to that pseudo MD. Do you think there is a chance that I can continue a psychiatric follow up with mayo clinic staff on the long term? That would give me peace of mind. thanks for helping
