Self injury and working up the courage to tell my psychiatrist

Posted by Britehope @britehope, Jan 31, 2012

I was wondering if anyone knows Mayo's philosophy about self injury. Do they follow the 72 hour hold? Trying to work up the courage to tell my psychiatrist, but honestly feel like I'm going to throw up just thinking about telling anyone. Does anyone have an experience with this?? I'm 37 years old and have depression, at the very least.

there is NO shame in reporting your suffering. yes, self injury is a legitimate diagnosis and You can be helped and healed. Your therapist will NOT be judgmental. being honest about your pain and behavior is the first step. there are many who will understand and support you.
feel the fear and step forward anyway. Good luck.

Well, I went to my psychiatrist and told him and after a little bit he walked me up the psychiatric hospital. I stayed for 9 days, and just got home today. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. The nurses and doctors were great and I can't believe how much I was taught. It was so helpful and I have learned so much. Just want to give you an update and say how happy I was with the Mayo program.
