Posted by jbsb93 @jbsb93, Jul 28, 2011

I was born with a hole in my heart and have had 2 surgeries. One to fix hole and the other a valve replacement. I've been recently told the I have a thoracic aneurysm and possibly will need more surgery.. Anyone gone th ru this before??

My doctors have all told me that exercise is important. You should just not do anything that raises your heart rate quickly or lift heavy weights. It is important to stay in as good of shape as you can. Walking is a good exercise that fits the description.

With your MD's approval, walking is a very significant exercise. To start, find a walking area that is on the flat and without distractions. Just walk for 15 or 20 minutes at the fastest speed you can without becoming winded. Gradually increase your time/distance. Good luck!

Hello Drew
I have a celiac artery aneurysm but the fear is real. I too have trouble letting go of this fear. I am waiting for follow up Ct but I wonder everyday how I would know if it’s growing and could it rupture. I wish I had words of comfort for you but I guess we have to have trust in the medical experts. I wish you peace of mind as Iwork on it also

Thank you Janet , yes left to have to trust experts - advised too small to take action and may or may not need too keeping blood pressure as is which is low. Exactly like you said - in between monitoring can it grow they say unlikely as gradual. Have to be calm and not move to fast which is hard to do in life. I’m under 50 and like to go fast and have 2 baby girls to run with. Don’t know how this happened but all we can do is trust and pray I guess.

Welcome to Connect, @ernestine, and thanks so much for sharing. Since you mentioned you have COPD, I thought you might be interested in scrolling through discussions in the Lung Health group, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/lung-conditions/ on Connect.

@ernestine, may I ask if your doctor is comfortable with your decision of not having any surgery? How are you managing the aneurysm? We sincerely look forward to getting to know you.

I have had two large aneurysms for 10 years.....no symptoms no problems.

For dental procedures like deep cleaning or even root canal was told no antibiotics needed , is that same as you all ? Thank you

REPLY

@Drew944 It is my understanding that the new protocol is to require an antibiotic only if the valve has been replaced. It apparently is not required for a AAA.
