PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection?

Posted by lgerkin @lgerkin, Mar 3, 2021

Has anyone had PRP injections? I have upper hamstring tendonitis and recently had a prolotherapy injection, which hasn't seemed to help, so I'm looking at other options. I know they're expensive and not covered by insurance but if the success rate is high, it's something I might consider. Thanks!

@lgerkin thank you for your post on Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in relation to your upper hamstring tendonitis. I found members such as @klaklarnold and @cobweb who have shared about PRP in relation to alternatives to knee replacements who may be able to share their experiences with you.

Have you consulted with your doctor regarding this as a viable option for you to consider?

Thanks Amanda! I just had a prolotherapy injection last month but the pain is getting worse, so I'm just doing some initial research on my own in case there is no improvement. My doctor did mention PRP as one alternative when we discussed treatment options a few months ago but he didn't go into detail since we decided prolotherapy made the most sense for now.

I did have PRP on the back and on the knee. Has worked very well. My back has been great for over 5 years and i do have prp on the knee every year. Saves me from doing TKR.

Thanks! Can you tell me if it took more than one injection to see results? It's not covered by my insurance and the cost is pretty high in my area.

Igerkin - My husband had PRP injected in his knee, and sorry, but it didn't help at all. : (

I have used for years. Keeps me from having TKR. It takes about 2 weeks to feel better. Get it in the spring.

Thanks for the feedback. My issue is tendon/tissue repair around the ischial tuberosity (sit bone) and I haven't had any luck with other injections or treatments, so this feels like the last option.

for the back only took one injection. Knee is more often. Depends on my activity and my acting like a 21 year old.. Yes, its expensive. I have noticed more companies insurance paying for it.

My PRP in knee helped greatly! I’m 75 and hope to do same healthy treatment annually for rest of my life. I understand it works for 80% of people and my injection cost $750. I know too many folks who’ve suffered for a year or more after knee replacement. So glad PRP was/is an option.

PRP was miraculous for my long-suffering daughter, both for SI joint and knee. After years of PT (and one surgery years back), relief in 24 hours as I remember. Her joints are loose and PRP tightens things up, I was told.

It works really well for some conditions.

This past week I mentioned it to an orthopedist and boy was he hostile about it! PRP was suggested by a rehab affiliated with a top hospital so for us, despite the fact that insurance thinks it is experimental, if felt mainstream.
