Hi @lotsofpain that must be so frustrating.

I wanted to tag @contentandwell and @reene29 as they have experience with uncontrollable bladder issues.

@lotsofpain what have you tried so far to help this?

@ethanmcconkey Hi @lotsofpain, and welcome to Connect.
I have had bladder issues and have gone for pelvic floor PT and am currently taking Trospium. Between the two of them, I am doing much better during the day, but I do get up multiple times at night. I'm not sure, but it sounds like your type of leakage may be stress incontinence. Do you have a problem at other times, as in when you sneeze? My problem is more one of urge incontinence.

I suspect that pelvic floor PT could help with either. I went to a urogynecologist and she prescribed the PT and the medication. I am considering a botox injection but still not certain, there are side-effects. I have been tested and it was determined that botox would help me, but I am a bit apprehensive about the potential problems, so I may decide to be content with how I am doing now.

At least when you leak, if when you are passing a stool, you are on the toilet. For other times, I would wear an incontinence pad, the absorbency should be determined by how much you leak. I always wear a pad and bring one or two extras with me, just in case. Part of the PT, for me, included exercises for fecal incontinence. That would probably help you with being able to not pass gas at inconvenient times.

I think you might find the PT very helpful. From what I have heard, although urologists do treat incontinence, they are not as good at as urogynecologists are for this. There are not many urogynecologists around, here in NH, so I went to MA to see one affiliated with Mass General Hospital. The one who would be convenient in NH had a very long wait for an appointment, about 6 months, which is why I chose to not use her.

Let us know what you do in finding some help with this. If you do go to a doctor and then PT, remember, PT doesn't make a difference overnight. My physical therapist told me to not skip more than two consecutive days, and I don't.

Hello @lotsofpain! Never in my life did I think somebody else had this problem besides me! I have had a neurogenic bladder and bowel since I was a kid; have to catheterize myself and use whatever it takes to have a bowel movement. Also chronic UTI' s necessitating a daily antibiotic up until recently. As I got older (I am now 69), weird things began happening with my "lower anatomy". I began leaking urine, first a little, then a flood, when I pass wind and/or poop. Eventually it got painful when the urine was leaking. I have severe IBS and pass gas quite violently, then both urine and poop come out. I never heard of a urogynecologist, have to find one. My problem now is I pass gas through my urethra and vagina, and boy does that hurt. Urine usually comes out too. My cardiologist suggested I might have a fistula between my bladder, vagina and bowel. Maybe you also have this sort of problem. What kind of doctor would even believe what our problem is? Please let me know how it goes for you. Your cause is physical, believe me. Good luck and best wishes, Peggy

Hello Peggy, Your plight sounds dire! I am the same age as you and had back to back UTIs that required 32 rounds of antibiotics over a 2 1/2 year period. During this time I had to constantly wear incontinence pads because I would leak or if I coughed, I would pee quite a lot. You say that' it is painful when urine is leaking'... This sounds to me like a urinary tract infection which must be why you are taking the antibiotics.
I, too have had IBS since I was about 13 years old. I keep regular with extra fibre in the diet but also magnesium citrate at bedtime.
All these antibiotics wreak havoc on the gut throwing off the balance of good and bad bacteria. 80% of the immune system resides in the gut. My naturopathic doctor recommended high quality probiotics as a means of protecting my gut and it seems to be working. I had a stool test and my gut seems to be very good condition in spite of all the antibiotics. She was expecting disastrous results.
On my most recent visit to a urogynecologist (Dr Walter in Montreal), he handed me a paper with an ad for Utiva on it. I did not expect it to work as I have tried everything possibly including d-mannose, drinking plenty of water, lowering carb intake, taking probiotics and also vaginal estrogen and more... Completely sceptical, I ordered the Utiva and have been taking it for 2 months since then and for the first time in years, a UTI did not return! I kept expecting it to start up as it has for years but the Utiva worked. If you go on the Utiva Health website, you can read testimonials. They all sound like mine.
And as a bonus, once the UTIs stopped, the leaking stopped! I never wear a pad now.
I hope you try the Utiva. To me it's a miracle. Btw start it right after a course of antibiotics when you don't have a UTI. Utiva is used to PREVENT a UTI so you have to catch it before it starts. Good luck!

@peggy1944 Welcome to Connect. I would agree with your cardiologist about a possible fistula. Not sure which state your in, but Mayo Clinic does have Urogynecologists. But, wherever you are, just google the term and names will come up. Or your GYN doctor probably has names. Look one up. You’d rather not have to deal with bladder infections all the time! And bladder infections can be dangerous as we get older. (I’m 71!). Let us know what you learn, please! I’ll bet lots of women have a similar problem!
