Pregnancy dilemma

Posted by marisan @marisan, Jan 2, 2018

I'm 23, last had sexual activity 3 months ago. I've been having regular periods but my upper belly above the belly button has grown fatter. I'm already fat and had an upper belly but it grew more. Took a pregnancy blood test recently and it came out negative (<2). Is there any reason for me to worry this is a pregnancy and not just fat accumulating which I should work out and eat better to shred off? This keeps me mentally so stressed I would really appreciate your help. Because of the stress my stomach stays upset and I can't work

Hi, @marisan, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds puzzling having the upper part of your belly grow and not understanding why.

I'd like you to meet some members who have discussed similar issues, like @swilliams55 and @nikkit. @gman007 and @gailb may also have some thoughts to share.

Have you gotten to see a doctor about this issue?

@marisan, Welcome. I would have no clue about the pregnancy aspect of your question, but there are other reasons why you may have something more than normal bloating that should be reviewed with a physician. I have chronic pancreatitis and it keeps the area inflamed and bloated. There are times that are worse than others, but it is always there. There are other things that could be going on and I don't think speculation is a very good habit when discussing health issues because they simply invoke more worry. Our imagination is typically far worse than the reality, so I would encourage you to see a doctor.

ThankYOU for both your replies. I'm tryinh to get it checked but due to my busy schedule I miss the doctor often. There is some burning like pain now in my right and left areas so it's quite scary now. Sometimes the burn like sensation spreads in re middle but is concentrated in the left and right

@marisan -- yes, getting to the doctor can be tough sometimes-- hard to fit it in a busy schedule, for sure. I'd really encourage you to keep trying, however, so you can get some peace of mind and get some answers on what might be going on with the growing upper abdomen plus burning pain there now.

Have you noticed any other symptoms at all?

Hello, @sanya_sharma, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I have merged your post with this discussion about a similar topic so other members knowledgeable and/or experienced with this issue might join in.

Sounds like you have taken care with your protection.

Here is a Mayo Clinic article that talks about bloating and related gastrointestinal issues that you may want to check out (note that the bloating section is near the bottom of the article): https://mayocl.in/2opgbKp.

Have you considered doing an over-the-counter test or a test at your doctor's office to put your mind at ease?

Hello everyone. So for the most part, my periods have been pretty regular all my life. I would normally get my period 2 to 3 days prior to last month’s date. For example, if I got it on the 20th, next month would be the 18, etc. I am now currently 20 years old. However, for the last three months, my period has been a few days late, coming even after last months date. Which is alarming, considering I normally get my period a few days before the month before. Last month I had my period on the 28th. It is now the 29th and no sign of getting my period soon. Instead I have a white discharge and some back pain. Could I be pregnant? I took a test in March as my period was late then, and it was negative. I then got my period, but it was very light.

I’ve also been getting severe dull headaches, my motor skills haven’t been so great (i am more clumsy), and I have been very moody. Dont know if these symptoms correlate. I do regularly have unprotected sex with my boyfriend, we are careful about it but I know it comes with risks.

Thank you!

Hi, @behavioralsci -- I moved your post on the pregnancy dilemma you are experiencing to this discussion where others have expressed similar concerns, in hopes that they can share some insights with you.

I'm sorry for the concern this is causing you. It is disconcerting if things get irregular with your period.

Have you considered making an appointment with your doctor to discuss the irregularity you've experienced a bit recently with your periods?

Hello @behavioralsci

Given the variety of symptoms you are experiencing I certainly agree with Lisa, @lisalucier. that an appointment with a doctor is most important at this point. Be sure to go to the appointment with a list of all the different symptoms you mentioned above, including the clumsiness, etc. and let the doctor decide where to go from there.

Will you please post and let us know how you are doing?

Teresa
