Video Q&A about Stroke Prevention

Description

Thomas G. Brott, M.D. a neurologist and clinical researcher at Mayo Clinic in Florida discsses:

  • Stroke Awareness
  • Stroke Risk Factors
  • Stroke Treatment Options
  • Stroke Prevention

He also talked about a new study CREST-2.

CREST-2 is actively enrolling participants with narrowing in their carotid artery without stroke or stroke warning signs (TIAs or mini-strokes) caused by that artery for a research study. The study is comparing intensive medical management alone to intensive medical management used in combination with a procedure to remove plaque buildup from the carotid artery in the neck. Dr. Brott and his colleagues working on the CREST-2 study want to know if medicine is as safe and effective as surgery or stenting in preventing a stroke caused by the buildup of plaque in the carotid artery. To find the answer, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has awarded a multimillion dollar grant to fund this seven-year clinical trial that will enroll 2,480 patients in 120 centers in the U.S. and Canada.

I HAVE ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND HAD CAROTID ARTERY SURGERY 6 MONTHS AGO ON THE RIGHT SIDE. IT WAS 95% BLOCKED. WOULD YOU SUGGEST I HAVE A STENT NOW TO WIDEN THE ARTERIES ON BOTH SIDES? I AM ON PLAVIX, ASPIRIN , AND LIPITOR

Hello @kandjmoore1,
Welcome to Connect; you've found a great community to get some answers because so many members here share similar symptoms and experiences.
I'd like to introduce you to @mlemieux, one of our wonderful Mentors, and also to @HeartPatches, @jerryasmus, @jacks4, @leonm, @lesjohnson, and @justdave, all of whom have discussed atherosclerosis in the past.

@kandjmoore1, do you have any remaining blockages in your carotid arteries after your surgery? You also mentioned taking Lipitor; could you tell us a bit more about your cholesterol, and diet?

I really didn't know what an eschemic stroke was! My neurologist didn't explain it the way it was explained here. It was so simple to understand here! Also, I have had some numbness in my face afterward and told my neurologist, but he didn't say that was to be expected, so I feel a little relieved to know that is normal. I did not have a goal for my hdl level, so that was good to know.

Beachgal,
I have sent a message to Dr. Brott that you found his explanation about strokes to be clear and helpful. I think he'll appreciate the feedback.

If you would like to connect with other people who are talking about strokes on Connect, I invite you to check out these 2 discussions:
