To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? That is the question.

Posted by silverwoman @silverwoman, Jan 4, 2021

I know I am not the only post-transplant patient who is thinking about getting the coVID vaccination. My nurse coordinator has told me that the transplant team at Jacksonville has not approved vaccination yet because of the lack of experience with it for our group. One of the Infectious Disease doctors has indicated in a Mayo communication that transplants should be getting vaccinated. The nurse coordinator has said that if we choose to get vaccinated then we should do our laboratories once a week. I'm frustrated and confused by the lack of clear guidance and seemingly conflicting opinions. Is anybody else feeling like this? Have you made any decisions about when and if you will get vaccinated?

@estrada53

I just received the Moderna dose 2. I think about what might be different for me now. Am I free to eat in restaurants, go to a crowded church service? For me, the incredible advantage of the vaccine is that the reaction to COVID, if I'm exposed will not result in severe illness or death. I'm not so concerned about restaurants, etc. I will still mask up, social distance, use discernment for my family and social interactions. Yesterday, only 6.3 percent of our nation is vaccinated. Not enough to take that huge, ultimate sigh. Little sighs, little by little!

@estrada53 From what I have read we should continue to mask up and distance socially in general, although the restrictions are less if you are with others who are fully vaccinated. Then it gets more confusing since they are not sure if vaccinated people can still be carriers and also, the vaccines are not 100% effective.

They are saying that those restrictions should stay in place until we reach herd immunity which may be never since there are many people who are anti-vax. I have read that the earliest we can expect to return to relative normalcy is 2023. That's not a great thought for those of us who are older. I said to my husband this morning that by the time we can travel again we may be too old to. 😖

Both my Drs Rhum and Primary said to get it. I had second shot yesterday and feel like it has triggered a huge flair. I’ had gotten down to 8 mg of pred and am Praying am better by morning and don’t have to go up. I won’t be able to work like this. It’s like the only side effects am having is PMR effects.

@sparker1, Since you mentioned being on a prednisone taper, I wonder if the taper has caused this reaction elevated reaction for you. When I tapered off my 10 mg prednisone dose 7 years after my transplant, I was miserable! - and that was without a Covid19 vaccination involved. I would experience days of discomfort and would need to go back up for a while before I resumed the taper. My PCP was fantastic to offer his support and suggestions along the way.
I had my 2nd dose on Friday. I hope that by the time you read this message that you are feeling better.
