Gabapentin vs Side Effects

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Oct 29, 2020

It was suggested I start a new discussion on the medication Gabapentin. I have been on this medication for 2+ years for Fibromyalgia I don't feel this is of benefit to me for the prescribed pain but my doctor is not of the mind to taper me off. The issue of dizziness and brain fog which is a problem in Fibromyalgia and I feel is intensified by the medication. I don't think it is helping my daily pain but I would like other thoughts on this medication, side effects and long term use.

@terimel

I’ve tried them all ! It doesn’t help ! None of those drugs do . I have arthritis as well and can not take any anti inflammatory meds as I have had a stomach bleed !

terimel, have you tried Cymbalta? It isn't for fibromyalgia originally. For depression/anxiety, I think??? But, folks found it really helped fibromyalgia pain! I take 120mg every morning. It's a miracle drug for me with this pain. I still have pain, but it keeps it pretty much lowered, acceptable. I also, use Voltarin creme. It's now OTC. I lather it on my legs, back, neck, whatever if I'm really hurting. Added to the Cymbalta, XS Tylenol, CBD/THC 1:1, melatonin, I can get to sleep w/much less pain, stay asleep and have relief. Also, I add the water therapy and walking. Just wonder if you do any of these things yet to help?

i couldn't/wouldn't take gabapentin because when I took it it affected my brain. I couldn't remember what my medicine was for or who gave it to me.

@benita7jay Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support. It sounds like you did not tolerate gabapentin well. May I ask why you were taking it?

I just recently stopped taking Gabapentin because of the "brain fog" it gave me. It helped with the pain of peripheral neuropathy in my feet and toes due to having diabetes, but the feeling of disorientation was too much to handle. I asked my doc if she could switch me to Lyrica for the pain. She did, and I'm having better results than I was having with Gabapentin. I've been taking Lyrica for 17-18 days now, I'll continue to take it because of the good results I've had from it thus far. Thank you, and I hope everyone has had an enjoyable Christmas up to this point. (4:53 PM, CST)

@wheelerma I forgot about this! I had terrible tremors while on gabapentin, at times I could not even sign my name. I remember going to the ER and the nurse rolling her eyeballs at me since I couldn’t even hold a pen to complete some paperwork. I guess she thought I was faking? Who would WANT to fake that?

I just started Gabapentin two weeks ago. Have been on 300mg x3 times a day for anxiety. I went up to 450 last night and have had tremors all night long. Didn’t sleep. Doctor says it’s anxiety and wants me to take 600mg. I’m scared to now. The tremors were pretty aggressive at several points of the night. I was wondering, when you went to the hospital, were they able to do anything for you to make them go away? Just trying to decide if I want to take this larger dose and if the side effects are more debilitating so I have a remedy for it.

What are you being prescribed gabapentin for? It's supposed to be an anti-seizure medicine but it is prescribed for off label conditions, most notable is neuropathy pain. I see in your post history you take Trazadone and Seroquel? Do you take any other meds? Just wondering about possible interactions.

I dont take Trazadone, as it had side effects I did not want. I do take Seroquel 125mg a day, spaced out into 5 x 25mg pills throughout the day for mood stabilization. I now take Gabapentin 300 3 times a day. But Im having tremors off and on. Most of the day and night. I cant sleep, the tremors keep me awake. I dont know if they are from anxiety or this medication. It does seem to calm me down. But if its causing the tremors its not worth it.

Has anyone taking the gabapentin had a significant weight gain from it,or am I just the lucky one?

Hello I take gabapentin for idiopathic neuropathy. I have to say in my case it really helps the nerve pain and I don’t seem to struggle with the brain fog side affects.
