Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) after knee replacement

Posted by captjamesh @captjamesh, Oct 21, 2020

So after hitting a wall at 93 Degrees my doctor and I said a MUA was in my best interest. They did all the pre op work just like they did for my surgery and even did the procedure in the OR. After waking up something was different I had no pain! My doctor said that he felt the resistance at 95 degrees and that it got worse until 105 degrees. Once he got to 114 it completely freed up and he went straight to 135 degrees. So I went home and didn’t have to take any meds at all because it just didn’t hurt. Oh I forgot to mention earlier that most of my pain was from the tendon on the outside of my knee being inflamed by rubbing the implant. He gave me a steroid shot for that. Today I had PT and after warming up we measured my ROM and it was 120!!!!! Still haven’t even taken any meds! We shall see how it goes over the next few days but if it feels like this I am golden! Finally! Wish I did this a month ago

@captjamesh - You will notice I changed the title of your discussion to better describe what it is about and to hopefully allow other members to find it. I can understand how great you must feel now after struggling with the pain and not having the expected range of motion after your knee replacement. That is really great news not needing any pain medications after the procedure. Thanks for sharing the update and creating the new discussion.

Thanks and I hope it might give someone on the fence the encouragement to go ahead and do it.
Slept through the night without and pain pills I did take some Tylenol PM to get to sleep. Woke up today still no pain and flexibility is still there. I will be stretching on my stairs within the hour! I am so happy!

Thanks Captjamesh, breath fresh air to read. Yes l was also stuck @ 92%, went through a worldwind deciding on Malupation & found a physio to support me.
Had my manipulation on 9/10, gained 125 range placed on a CPM machine while in hospital around clock for 4 days/ night. Left with 125 range. Lost 10% next day within a week my scar tissues became very aggressive again. Now hiring a CPM for a mtg @ $950. Hoping it'll be end of my hiccup. So excited & pleased for you James

In 9/21, I completed a two stage revision because of an infection arising from 2 prior TKA’s. As a result, my left knee/ leg will not bend. I just had a revision/ manipulation on 4/19/22 hoping to get my knee to bend again. . After 13 days very little bending. I am using CPM machine and on the Mayo PT plan as prescribed. There is not much progress. ROM 43 degrees and I walk like a pirate. Very bummed. Has anyone experienced those

Sorry to hear you have been through a lot ….Unfortunately yes I had tkr in august no bend just like yourself. I had mua 6 weeks after tkr …. You know mua you have to do pt everyday for a week we’ll we ended up doing more for swelling than bending … so it did not work for me….I am 8 months out now still struggling with bend I am at 70-75 now….. I know you must have read on these pages about mfr release… well I started that and water therapy like at 9 weeks…. That is how I have gotten to where I am ….. without mfr I think I would be in rougher shape now… I go for second opinion today I still have pain and get swollen every time I try new exercise or walk ,stand to much….. if you can try water therapy it may be very helpful…. I found water therapy place in my area called dr he sent script….,was pretty easy . My prayers go out to you I hope you find some relief….

I am a little over 4 months out of tkr. Keep me in thearpy over 3 months. Intense. Dr want do an x ray or CT so I really want to know what's going on. I told him over a month ago pt was going backwards and I was ignored. So yes I have a trust issue now . And no Dr will see me till August for 2nf opinion. I was told by a. Dr I went to in past at Emory that at. Rom 105 they don't even consider a mua. Confused

Just thinking maybe he wants to because you are stiff and sore….. if you can try mfr I feel been very beneficial to you no matter what can’t hurt…. Like I have no range of motion but crazy I don’t feel stiff because of the mfr…. Look up myofascial release see if any in your area….

Thank you I will check into that.

Wonderful comments and medical experiences. Many thanks! Not sure my problem "fits". TKR is fine, according to surgeon (and PA).....is much larger (lt)than (rt). My replacement is much larger in lt, than rt. I am not a large person. My continued pain, according to them, is due to scar tissue from broken patella.....due to fall from being told to "wait longer" for knee replacement.....after being told 2 years before..."ANY TIME". Advice...have call into surgeon....maybe cortisone shot or external manipulation? Cannot imagine living, barely, on Advil. Everyday is agony.
