Journaling - The Write Stuff For You?

Posted by Ginger, Volunteer Mentor @gingerw, Jun 19, 2020

Long ago –okay, for me, it was long ago!- it was common for a young person to keep a diary, a place to write down the heartaches and giggles of growing up, the trials and tribulations of school, friendships, sports and activities. Sometimes it was a locked book, so that we felt secure knowing our secret thought remained a secret.

How times have changed! While I no longer keep a classic diary, it is no less important for me to write down thoughts, ideas, and heaven-knows-what, on a regular basis. Nowadays, the common name is a “journal”, and seems to appeal to every segment of society. There are an abundance of ways to do this, and so many reasons why. Although I prefer longhand, many people use a computer, and there are any number of prompts/styles/methods.

Let’s explore this together!

Do you journal? What prompted you to start? What would you tell someone who wants to start?

brilliant share! Ooh, I loved reading this and bookmarked the page. Sometimes I like having a prompt, especially aft3er this crazy year that seemed more like TEN years. Between the Pandemic and the "Derecho"/Cat #3 Hurricane hit eastern Iowa. We and the town of Cedar Rapids have lost 85 percent of our tree canopy. There are a LOT of homes that still have blue tarps on their roofs. We will be replacing windows that were damaged in the Spring. We want the roof repairs of our neighbors to be ahead of our repairs that can be done when it is warmer out. Bless your heart, Ginger, thank you!.

I lived in Cedar 15 years! I find I journal in emails. I hope the recipients don't get tired of all of my emails. I tried to blog, I may try that again.

Are you looking to restart a writing practice? Would you like to connect on a deeper level with yourself, and take a look inside your thoughts? Maybe you feel stagnant or mired down in today's world, and want a fresh viewpoint.

I found this 5 day writing challenge, and have taken part in it since Day 1. It is only 15 minutes a day, although you may find yourself writing for a longer time. With permission from the person who created this, here is the link!

@hopeful33250 @marjou I will be interested to hear your thoughts on it. Personally, I like having a bit of guidance that this offers, and it is spurring me to sit down and write.

@gingerw Hi Ginger and All:

Well, I want to report that I did the Day 1 meditation/writing exercise and it was great!! The breathing exercises as well as the poem/meditation really set-the-stage for writing. I was able to be free to express ideas and it surprised me.

Has anyone else tried this? If so, please share your experience. Was it helpful? Did your response to the exercise surprise you?

@paulalina We all should thank Nadia Colburn for her writing encouragement. I hope you get to find yourself writing and looking at things differently, like I did! Sometimes we need a "kick in the pants" or pen in this instance, to renew a habit we have had. Looking at things a bit differently than we did before, can open up a whole new whirlwind of ideas and views.
