Transplant housing in Rochester

Posted by lakegirl409 @lakegirl409, Jun 4, 2020

Hi , We are heading to Rochester for Stem Cell transpant. Can anyone provide good recommendation for housing. Considering Transplant House vs apartment or home rental. What was your experience?
Thank you !

I highly recommend staying at Gift of Life transplant house. You will need to make an appointment for a tour before you can stay there. So, call ahead. The people there are amazing, plus you know it will be clean. There are kitchens for coming your own food and you will make friends that will last a lifetime. Most likely there will be others there that are going through the same thing so you can encourage and learn from each other.

Blessings,
JoDee

@lakegirl409, I am a liver and kidney transplant recipient. My husband and I stayed at the Gift of Life House for 12 weeks in 2009. We were 750 miles from home, and the GOL provided us with a warm homelike atmosphere. I looked into the GOL before my trip to Rochester, and I'm glad I did my homework. When my pretransplant health turned to a critical stage, and I was hospitalized in Mayo Methodist, my husband took the tour. He immediately requested a room and was able to move in that afternoon. I later joined him, and we appreciated the cleanliness and being able to be see other patients and caregivers in varying stages of their medical journeys. We could be as isolated or as social as we wanted.
For us it was important to see other patients as they went thru and as they recovered. Simple words of encouragement by others who are gong thru similar situations is powerful.
The Gift of Life House is a place but more than that it is the people.

@grandpabob, Do you have anything that you might want to share about the Gift Life House?

@lakegirl409, We were fortunate to have stayed at GOL on three occasions. (longest for 7 weeks) Without exception we found GOL to be everything they advertised and more. Like Rosemary mentioned, the fact that you find yourself among others who for the most part are in the same circumstances as you, is very helpful to help recuperate. Only a few blocks away from most of the Mayo facilities is also a blessing, on the days you may not be able to walk to appointments (or want to) the shuttle services are great. I know with me, eating was particularly difficult, the ability for my care givers to cook what I was most inclined to eat was beneficial.
A lot of semi private space like TV rooms, reading rooms.
Clients seemed to adhere to the cleaning regimen which is critical to transplant recipients.

I absolutely endorse Gift Of Life Transplant House.

Here's one more vote for Gift of Life Transplant House!!! My hubby and I stayed there briefly after my kidney transplant and bilateral nephrectomy. We only needed to stay for a very short while because I recovered very quickly but it was clean, restful, healing and germ free. The house was donated by Ed Pompeian who himself was a transplant recipient who also was concerned with where to stay during treatment. Enjoy your recuperation at GOL. Best of luck. @jolinda
